1969 Bally Model 809 progressive coin problem

I think this is referred to as a 5 coin progressive.  My problem;  When I insert the first quarter it sometimes jumps to "3rd quarter", sometimes it goes to "first quarter" and then when I insert the second quarter it stays on "first quarter".


When I get it to accept all 5 , spin the reels and everything works fine.  the "5th quarter" light is on, when I instert the first quarter the light jums to "3rd quarter" and there is a humming noise like a switch is sticking and if I wait 5 seconds it will switch to "1st quarter"


Hope this make sense to someone, need help on where to look or replace switch?

It sounds like you need to pull out the top unit and lubricate your odds assembly.  If it is sticky, and slow to reset, that might account for your problems.  A drop or two of oil on the white plastic shaft where it connects through the metal bushing will help, and also lightly but politely oil the spider arm contacts.
It sounds like your odds reset relay is not being released because of some switches on the odds disc itself not opening in time.
Please do not let it buzz for too long or you may burn up some coils.

Thanks for the help, I will slide the top assembly out this weekend and take a look.  though I may have further questions, thanks in advance! Is 3 in 1 household oil ok to use or is there something special I need?

Do not lubricate the coil plunger (that's the part that goes inside the coil if your unaware), only the linkage that advances the white plastic disk and the shaft that  goes thru the contact board. Chances are you will need to use a de-greaser like PB Blaster or the likes to soften up the old grease or remove it from the linkage and pivot points. I, most of the time just use the PB Blaster because it help to dissolve the old grease and allow things to move again. The only time I re-lube is with Lubriplate and that's when I have cleaned the assembly of all previous grease.

Thanks for all the help.  I took the top assembly out and lightly oiled some of the moving parts of the odds wheel and it seemed to help.  Once in a while it still hesitates to advance to the second coin.  I will take it back out when I have more time and do a thorough cleaning and re-oil now that I have a better understanding of how this works.
