IGT S+ slant top no reel stop sound?

I have a S+ Slant Top sound issue. I have dip switch #3 (sound generator) ON however, I'm getting NO reel stop sound. Reel spin sound is fine. Do slant tops not have reel stop sound since there is no pull lever or is it an SP Chip issue? It has a SP731 in it now.

I've never had a slant S+.
I'm guessing the sound chip emulates the reel stop sound of the pull handle solenoid "clicking"?

Try turning off that 3rd dip switch and see what happens?  :Scratch-Head:
Sounds like you are using 10MHz MPU board.

Maybe there's a bad ground to your speaker wire?
Also, check and see if there's an AY38912 sound chip in the socket at location U49.

I did some more troubleshooting and this is what I got. I can not get both reel spin and stop sounds at the same time with the #3 dip switch ON or OFF. I'm confused. Is this an SP setting issue? I have made all dip switch or in test setting changes with zero credits on the machine. I don't see a "2" (2-0 or 2-1) setting in Test mode. How can I get both reel spin and stop sounds together?

Dip switch #3 ON:  Good Reel Spin Sound (No Reel Stop Sound)
Dip switch #3 OFF: Good Reel Stop Sound (No Reel Spin Sound)


MPU: 75505704 Rev A (1994)
Game: SP731
Reel: SS3634
Sound: AY38912/P

I would set both switches to on.
With the 731 you should be able to make all the settings on/off in the SP settings.
Download Rons (R273) simplified guide to SP settings out of the file space.

Its been so long since I have seen an S+ slant top, on an upright machine, the "clicking reel stop sound is actually made by the handle release coil being pulsed each time the reels stop. So , if the slant top does not have one of these installed, then more than likely you will not get the "clicking" sound when the reels stop. check and see if the reel stop noise is coming from the speaker when switch # 3 is off, if so then it is being generated electronically. the reel "clicking" noise when switch #3 is on is a physical knocking sound generated by the plunger being pulled in to the coil and making the sound. if you do have a handle solenoid installed and there is no clicking sound, the rectifier on the coil could be bad (common)  or the spring has lost some of it strength,  to correct this you disassemble the unit, stretch the spring and reassemble.

with a SP731  no (2_0) settings  that's with a 16 meg board

only switch #3 is for the sound,

1-2 are for the hopper limits 3 is for the sound generator, 4 is for the game speed with certain SP chips and for other SP chips it is for Bill acceptance payments payout etc.

With the #3 dip switch OFF the reel stop sounds IS coming from the speaker. With the #3 dip switch set to ON the reel spin sound does come from the speakers but, NO reel stop sound is heard from the speakers.

look at your other upright slot machine, on the back of the handle mech. mounted to the top is the coil assembly I am referring to, look and see if you can find that coil assembly somewhere in your slant top, if its there then its defective or not hooked up.  if not there then that is why your machine is doing what it is doing!

I'll look into what Jim has mentioned and compare it to my upright with a pull handle but, I don't understand why it simulates a reel stop sound with #3 OFF but, won't with the switch turned on. I know on some uprights the reel stop sound is simulated by a click from the pull handle coil (switch). This slant top does make a reel stop sound from the speakers with the dip switch off. Why won't make the sound in conjunction with the reel spins sound with dip switch #3 ON??

there is NO SOUND GENERATED for the reel stop when switch #3 is on, plain and simple!  the reel stop noise is made by the handle solenoid being pulsed via the software.

Thanks for the clarification Jim. I had come to that conclusion myself after comparing machines and swapping the MPU boards. With it being a slant top, there is no pull handle or solenoid to make the "click" noise. What has thrown me for a loop is with the dip switch #3 OFF it does simulate a wheel stop sound from the speaker. Just one of things that make you go hmm. Slant tops are slightly different than uprights. Well at least I have a lighted service/cash button unlike early S+ uprights. I guess you can't have it all. It's not worth the effort to install a solenoid and wiring just to hear a "click" at the end of each reel spin.
