Bally Alpha Hot Lines backlit reels not lighting.

I just bought a Bally Alpha Hot Lines Machine that has back lit reels that cycle on boot up but do not light when the machine pays.  The fellow I bought it from tells me it is a S6000 machine in an Alpha cabinet.  He said S6000 machines do not support back-lit reels.  This makes no sense to me.  It is clearly an Alpha machine with Alpha MPU and all other parts.  Can you import S6000 software to a Alpha machine? Was Hot Lines ever an S6000 machine?  Would really like the back-lit reels to work.  Any guidance would be appreciated.
