Bally E-831-3 freaking out

Hello all,
I recently picked up a Bally E-831-3.  When I turn it on it powers up but then starts acting erratic.  I can hear multiple solenoids activating, the bell will ring randomly, and the payout meter blinks several different numbers rapidly.  I noticed that the fuse indicator on the hopper was lit.  When I changed the fuse it immediately blew the circuit in my house that the machine was plugged into.  If I do a manual handle release and pull the handle the reels turn.  Sometimes they stop (always in different orders) and sometimes one will stop and the other 2 will keep spinning.  Sounds to me like something is shorting out.  I checked all the plugs and wires and nothing stand out.  Any suggestions on where to start?

To start, it sounds like you have a bad hopper board. They can be rebuilt but your best bet is to get the newer re-designed board sold on EBay by seller foxsslots1. Search for “Bally slot machine hopper control board” and 2 versions will come up. The E-831 should use an E-1000 series board. The other thing you want to do is verify the voltages from the power supply. The pins need to be cleaned and inspected for cracks in the solder. Many problems in these machines are due to bad connections. You’ll also want to clean the pins on the ram board that’s mounted to the mpu board. Lastly, the reel mechanism needs a good cleaning and lubrication to work well. 3-1 oil works well here.

Thank you sir!  I had already removed the hopper board.  I didn't see any burn marks that would indicate a short.  I'll go ahead and replace it anyhow.  I also have noticed that the battery was not a full 3.6 volts.  Just ordered one, hoping its the right one.  Mine had no identifying markings on it.  Thanks for taking the time to answer.  Have a great week
