Sound went away

Brand new at this so I will give as much info as I can. I just bought an IGT s2000 triple double red white and blue three reel single pay line. When first powered up showed Netplex link down. I researched here and found that varta battery needed replaced. I replaced and machine powered up worked as it should and had great sound. After a few days sound went out. I unplugged it for a day or two powered back up and sound was back. Another couple of days sound back out. Harnesses look good obviously speakers good. I bought amp board for the top cabinet installed and still no sound. No static, no humming. It has 1270 mpu with enhanced memory board with a dspl0002 chip and no SIM card. I just don

Actually it is recommended you remove the Varta battery completely. For the 1270 board you can remove the Varta but you must also clip the U16 regulator.

I would recap the power supply. Seems I am always recommending power supply caps - they are all old and really does fix a lot of problems. ( Full disclosure - I do try to repair the power supplies )

Sounds like it could be time/temperature/noise problem. Check the fan(s) in cabinet and be sure it is working properly, not just spinning, should move some air.

The sound works but stops after time -

Something in the sound circuit getting too hot to work properly. (1270 MPU board, daughterboard)
Power supply getting hot and aluminum electrolytic capacitors are old and should be replaced anyway. (caps go bad, cause AC ripple to increase on DC voltages which looks like noise.)
Cabinet fan not working.
Oxidized/bad connections in the sound circuit. Unplug and re-plug connectors, daughterboard, MPU board and maybe socketed chips - but be careful don't cause any damage...

You will probably have to just try to replace things to determine the problem. Hard to troubleshoot the circuit as it works, just not more than a few hours.

Thanks for the feedback. Fan works fine, it is in the air conditioning. I have reseated boards and dspl chip but none of the other chips. After second time it went out it has not returned. Been out for weeks now. I will look up how to recap power supply. Thanks for all your help.

Just need clarification on the power supply. Would the caps affect the sound only?  Everything else works perfect.

Probably not just affect the sound only. Replacing the caps in the power supply would help with noise on the DC outputs. If the machine is working ok with no other problems you could hold off on doing the power supply caps and just try to determine the sound problem.
You said the sound does not work at all now. That may be a little easier to troubleshoot now instead of working for a few hours and then failing. That failure is usually something getting hot and failing, cooling down and working. An intermittent problem so to speak. Now it sounds like you have an actual failure of the sound circuit, which probably means whatever was getting hot and failing is now bad and has failed.
A few ways to proceed with that depending on your troubleshooting abilities and electronics understanding. Availability of parts on hand to swap out, presenting another problem with damaging more parts, or breaking another machine if that is where the parts come from. Cost and time of getting parts to swap. Using the schematics to troubleshoot the signals to see if you can determine where the failure may be. Can that even be done with the parts in the machine? Could take machine to a slot tech and pay to fix it. Could talk to someone like me on the phone and troubleshoot remotely, it can be done and I have had some good success with other members, takes time and patience,  lots of patience lol.

Thanks for your help in advance. Like I said I am new at all this computer stuff. I can ohm out the harness to double check those if I knew the exact path they take. Of course I know the path down to motherboard. As far as checking chips if that is possible I know nothing about that. If I knew which chips were involved with sound I do not have a problem replacing those if they snap in like the dspl chip. I did solder the varta battery but that pretty large. I will reinspect harnesses and get to the mother board to see if I see any visual problems. The mouse and memory boards looked fine to me. If there are certain voltages or resistance on particular parts I can do that I am pretty sure. I am just an old auto body guy who restores gas pumps and such. I will sure get back with you and reach out to you when I need it.

Finally had time to look at harness. All of the harnesses ohmed out fine, from the mother board on the back wall up to the sound amp board. Did not see anything unusual, of course idk exactly what to look for. Would it be a good shot in the dark to replace the dspl0002 chip and see what happens? I assume that is the sound chip on the enhanced board that has games 1 & 2, version and stepper base chips on it.  Like I said earlier everything else works fine. Reel slot stop solenoid setting works, mechanical bell settings work ( I have it set to hand payout only). Volumes set at 5. Or do I find someone in the Dallas area that repairs them and take them the whole machine. I have no spare parts to swap out for testing.

Found capacitor C107 that appear to have leaked. Could this be my sound problem? It is on the cpu next to where the top memory board attaches. I have been told to remove varta battery and cut U16 out to maybe fix sound idk if that will do anything to sound?? Tried to send pic but too large.

I would have to look at the schematic later to see if that cap is for sound. I would guess right now probably not, but if it is bad it would need to be changed.  Removing the varta battery and U16 will not help the sound. Removing those will help in the future as the varta battery is prone to leaking when old/bad and destroying the board/traces. It is not needed most times for home use, the casinos needed them to keep the accounting data when the machine was powered off. I do not have a working S2000 at this time to help remotely. I may be some help if you want to PM me and we can set up a time to talk.

Still no luck on sound coming back. Could it be I purchased a bad sound amp?  Does anyone know how to test the amp?  I have 13 volts going to it. Is there a way to see if anything is coming through the harness to the amp. I know my harness is good.
