PE+ Dollar Bill Validator not fitting in chassis well

Finally getting around to addressing the dbv in my PE+ machine.
The DBV-145-SS-6031-B022  was working when I first got machine, but something was binding when closing the door, so I took the unit out.

Now trying to get it re-installed.  Starting with a loose metal bracket hanging in the door, under the dbv opening (1st pic ).  I've seen another machine that has NO metal bracket there.

Wondering what it is and is it needed?

Was it possibly put in there to prevent people from attempting to insert bills?

Here's a pic of how the bracket mounted.  I went ahead and took it out.  Maybe there to help steer rejected bills?   Turns out it wasn't the issue.

Still having the not fitting problem.  I just tried my dbv in another PE+ chassis with the same result.
The lock mechanism on the door scrapes the dbv unit upon closing, and then something holds the door open bout 1/4". I removed the entire shroud and sidelight assembly, it looks to be the top of the dbv hitting against the inside of door.

Wondering if:
 dbv is not assembled correctly,
 is there a trick to installing it,
 or is the DBV-145-SS-6031-B022 supposed to fit the PE+ chassis??
What's the most popular dbv used in these chassis?
