Removed the reels, cleaned every spring, dried grease blob, "wiper contacts etc. When I manually push on the bars under the reels, I see that 2 are sticking. I cleaned them well and lubed them with a few drops of machine oil. I got the reels remounted and got the mech back into place. Tried tripping the coin wire and pulled the handle, which immediately got stuck (wedgie?)
      I'm done for today. I learned a good bit about the machine. I can't find the sweet spot with tension on the forked piece with the long black spring. I have been able to get 1 or even 2 reels to spin some with the plunger (U shaped piece), but now it just gets the handle stuck. I would have to compress that black spring about a quarter inch to tighten up on the lock nuts and allow the little black L bracket to be "flush" with the edge, or close to it...

Regarding cleaning the mechanism under the reels.

All the bushings, levers, and shafts should move freely.
Best to prop up one side of the reels chassis about 2 inches on cardboard to catch the lubricant.
Cover plug connectors with something to prevent them from getting wet while cleaning.
Apply a generous amount of penetrating oil to all the parts that operate the reels.
Let it set overnight then apply a second treatment. Wipe dry and apply 3 in 1 machine type oil.
Shafts, brushing should move sideways and spin on the shafts.
Apply more oil and test the unit in the machine. If it preforms properly, remove and wipe clean.

I removed reels and set aside (carefully). I manually moved the wiper arms/contractors and sprayed penetrant on any moving parts that were metal to metal. There's a bunch. I moved each wiper back and forth until they started moving better. I got reel 1 mechanism to spring back really nice, reel 2 is a lil sluggish, but works. Reel 3 doesn't allow the contractors to move all the way to the last "buttons". Seems the wire bundle is in the way, just a bit.
    I have adjusted the L stop bracket forward and rear until it quits hanging up on the curved piece with notches. THAT is what causes the handle to get stuck forward... I still can't get the reels to spin when handle is pulled. I'll pull the reel mech out and try some more later. Thanks so much for the help. I'm starting to see how things interact with each other. Also starting to see why older slots are worth big money when they work properly...

1] remove the reels

2] push in the u-shaped bar until the main shaft releases and the trip lever snaps back down onto the rubber pad

3] grab the clock fan

if the reel index arms aren't held back pretty much all the way in the slots in the top plate (they sprang forward), it's likely the latch pawls are sticky and not engaging to hold the arms back.

latch pawls are part #25 on 2400 manual page 97.  The pawls must rotate freely on their shaft, and the latch link (part #23) and timer link (#12) must slide easily.

also verify the clock timer link movement is controlled by the clock ... (ignore ratchet/gear and link that is varying the overall length is installed backwards in the video - it's supposed to be assembled like page 91 shows)

The L stop tripping part in most cases is even with the back of the reels chassis.

Like wolf mentioned, you can actuate the reels out of the machine to narrow down the problem by eliminating either the reels or the handle kick mechanism.

3rd reel mechanism seem to have more problems kicking than the other two reels.
Apply a second treatment of penetrating oil and let it sit over night.
Check the ratchet wheels associated with the push levers. If they don’t spin, it’s an indication this part of machine hasn’t be cleaned for a long period and the lubricant has become solidified. This also may apply to the rest of the machine.
