New Member - Series E froze May be tilt issue or keys?

First post and new Bally Series E owner.  Worked on arcade and pinball machines my whole life and need some help on my issues.

Picked up a Pure Gold E-1348 5 line machine. I was working and the owner said it quit.  The machine powers up and all lights work but does not accept coins and the 4 led's below the reels ( tilt, winner paid, insert coins and coins accepted) stay lit.  He said he would keep pressing the reset button and sooner or later the machine starting working again.  He got tired of fighting it.  He did say the flat cable was bad and his son patched it and pointed it out to me. 

I got the machine home and ordered a new 16 conductor flat cable with a dip connector. I believe it connected the I/O board to the MPU.  It came in and I changed it.  The machine came on with no LED lights below the reels coming on.  It still will not accept a coin or work.  I replaced the old cable and it went back to the original issue with LED light on.

With the new cable installed  the LED display reads O . . 4 . .    (see pic)  I looked in the service manual and do not see that error code.

The reset switch works but the test switch does not. I read where the test switch is inactive when the machine is in tilt mode. There is a key to reset the tilt and I tried that.  No luck.

I unplugged the machine and took out the battery thinking it would reset to factory mode and it did the same thing.

There is a key for reading the meter and not sure what that is but is makes no difference either.

I believe if I can get it out of tilt mode, I can use the test switch to diagnose any problems.   It may be a simple process unless you don't know.

Hello, welcome to NLG.
There aren’t a lot of people with experience on E-series but I know they will probably need to ensure they are talking about the correct machine so a picture of the entire machine as well as the inside and/or the game boards. If I recall that series of machines has a stack of two or maybe more boards?

First try is to remove the two 5101 RAM chips, clean their legs, and plug them back in.

Second, at www.slotmachinerepair.com there is a "helpful PDF" link where you can download the complete service manual for the E-Series.

Update.

I took y'all's advice and took the boards out and reset all IC's and cleaned all connectors.

The machine is back to semie normal mode and the test switch is working.

All test modes are working and the only issue I am having is when I run the load test, nothing happens. I will test the power supply next and
I am pretty sure I have a power problem.  I will check the test points and let you know the progress.

I forgot to mention that I discovered I have  a machine that was designed for use in the military.  I was able to find
the operators manual to help with the testing.

Here are some pictures.

The picture of the front machine shows all 4 LED's illuminated and that has gone away with resetting the IC's and cleaning the connectors.

Update.

I thought I had a power issue because the machine did nothing during the load test.

I checked my voltage son the Power Supply board and I believe they are within tolerance
10v  10.3
7 v   7.3
5v    4.8

This was without a load on it.  Just static voltages




I just noticed on the power-up test, I am getting the following errors.

100006
100007

Looking at the power-up malfunction codes in the manual and if I am interpreting it correctly,  the 6 is a memory  test failure.
The 1 in front maybe be IC 1?
