Advice needed IGT S-Plus Red White & Blue
« on: March 20, 2026, 08:04:38 pm »
I just got an IGT S-Plus Red White & Blue

symptoms/issues:

#1 Coin comparitor (cc-16-d-vac-r1) buzzes when it's ready to accept coins

#2 It will accept coins... but only 3... then buzzing stops and any more coins added pass through to the tray... after I spin (spin reels button, play max credits button, arm lever all work) the buzzing resumes indicating it's ready to accept coins again... at which point it takes up to 3 coins again...

#3 all payouts go directly to the tray...  nothing goes to Credits... same with deposited coins... they go right to the coins played counter...

#4 hopper will often pay 1 extra coin (especially on 1 coin payouts... but on other payouts also)... at which point it throws the 3100 error... if I toggle the door latch it clears the error and the buzzing resumes saying it's ready for coins...

#5 the Bill Validator shows no signs of life (I'm hoping this is because of a setting?)

#6 I'm missing one of the screws with springs on the hopper... would love to know where to buy one...

what I've done so far:

disassembled/cleaned/reassembled the hopper...  knife looks good... feels secure no play or movement...  only 1 wire running to the hopper bin... I belive I've read that is a level sensor...  other pictures I've seen show 3 wires going to hoppers... so not sure if that is an issue...

I removed and blew on / inspected the coin comparitor...  after doing that is when it started buzzing and taking coins...   before that it would not buzz or take coins...

inspected the main board
  - Model: 1912-0
  - SP1145 Game Chip
  - SS3678 S-Plus Reel Chip dated 1/10/91
  - no dip switches (I've seen a set of blue dip switches on pictures of other main boards)... mine just has the solder points...

previous owner said they replaced the battery...  I don't see a coin battery on the main board... only a AA battery

any advice on the symptoms/issues I've described would be wonderful...

You can only add enough coins for game to be played. (without installing a special SP chip)  Push the cash-credit button to light it up and wins will go to credit meter.  Check the hopper brake spring is working correctly so you don't get extra coin paid.

Are you missing the black hopper spring or the silver colored spring?
The black springs go to the top two holes, while the silver springs go to the bottom two.
The black springs are stronger to help hold the bowl tight against the wheel when full and heavy.
They're also supported with long springs from the top of the bowl to the handle.

You need to take a clear photo of the battery area on the MPU board and post it here.
The only requirements being is that the photo must be resized to be no larger than 1000 pixels per one side either vertically or horizontally.
I'm not sure that you have an "AA" battery - the AA batteries are only 1.5 volts DC.
You may have a "1/2AA" battery cell - which is slightly different in that holds about 3.6 volts DC.
Turn OFF the power switch before removing /inserting any circuit boards.

The buzzing noise...is it coming from the solenoid for the "rake" behind the coin comparitor or the solenoid for the divertor gate underneath the coin-in optic boards?
Close the main door and open down the belly door, to get a closer look at the coin mech.

The single-ground wire for the hopper bowl is fine.
It's only later on, they changed the configuration to 3 wired sensors.

Update:

#3 and #4 resolved...

added a couple new ones #7 & #8...

I uploaded a bunch of photos I've taken to my google photos... https://photos.app.goo.gl/6r2XG1K5qLAwysG17

symptoms/issues:

#1 Coin comparitor (cc-16-d-vac-r1) buzzes when it's ready to accept coins

#2 It will accept coins... but only 3... then buzzing stops and any more coins added pass through to the tray... after I spin (spin reels button, play max credits button, arm lever all work) the buzzing resumes indicating it's ready to accept coins again... at which point it takes up to 3 coins again...

#5 the Bill Validator shows no signs of life (I'm hoping this is because of a setting?)

#6 I'm missing one of the "Silver" screws with springs on the hopper... would love to know where to buy one...
the screw/spring on the hopper that I'm missing is one of the Silver ones...

New:
#7 the arm lever is stuck down...  it still works but it won't return to the vertical pointing straight up position...  its stuck in the almost completely down  (6"-9" from the normal stop point)... if I add a coin I can move it those 6" and it will spin the reels.... but it still won't return to the upright position...  I have been able to get it to go back up a couple of times.... by jiggling it... but I don't want to put too much pressure on it...    when it does go back up... sometimes it acts like it wants to be stuck and not come down... but it usually will...  it mostly seem to do that if it goes up what feels like a click too far...

#8 the 'Change' button does not light up...  it works... when I press it the light on the top of the machine lights up...   I'll have to figure out how to get to the bulbs and see what it is to replace it probably...

Fixed:
#3 all payouts go directly to the tray...  nothing goes to Credits... same with deposited coins... they go right to the coins played counter...

I got the wins to go to credit... had to hit the 'Cash Out' button... figured out you can only do that at certain times... when it's lit wins go to credit...

#4 hopper will often pay 1 extra coin (especially on 1 coin payouts... but on other payouts also)... at which point it throws the 3100 error... if I toggle the door latch it clears the error and the buzzing resumes saying it's ready for coins...

I cleaned the hopper brake and oiled it... fingers crossed that seems to have fixed the extra coin payout / 3100 error...
while doing so I realized I had a silver spring/screw on the bottom and a black one on the top... so I swapped those to put the black up top and the silver down below...

Thanx Stayouttadabunker...
I'm missing a Silver one...   also thanks for the info about the black going in the top... I had them swapped on one side...

I'm also missing the support springs that support the hopper bin...  those look like a generic springs... are they special in any way? or can I just get a couple springs from the hardware store for that?

the battery I confirmed is labeled AA... but it is also labeled 3.6v

see some pics here:  https://photos.app.goo.gl/6r2XG1K5qLAwysG17

I see that...it's rather too large but it works.
Somebody folded the length the battery legs underneath to reach the soldering pads...lol
It's overkill...that battery is probably good for 30 years!  :rotfl:

One spring for the hopper bowl is sufficient.
It's not rocket science...just needs to be about 3" long.
Any hardware store should have them.

You're going to have to learn how to be somewhat more mechanical to take apart a slot arm mechanism.
It's somewhat complicated but doable.
Are you good with tools...sockets and Allen keys?
There's like four nuts to remove to take the handle mech off of the cabinet wall....but you have to have the right Allen key to insert into the bottom of the handle to remove a bolt that holds the handle to the shaft.
I'll explain more if you want.

Your comparitor (CC) is buzzing because the capacitor inside is dried up.
You either need a new cap or another CC.

Re-seat the cashbox to see if it will cycle.
You'll hear a motor running if it's not jammed.

Yeah...to send wins to credits, you have to press the cashout button once...>>> when there's NO credits on the machine.
Otherwise, it will just cashout whatever credits there are on the machine.

You can put your hand down the right side by the slot arm.
You will find that there is a square piece of metal on a pin that holds the arm in place as it ratchets down..
If you wiggle that while pulling back the arm - all will return to its normal position.
Before you take the whole thing apart you can spray it with WD40 and see if that cleans enough gunk up.
You will want to have some paper towel on hand as much of the black goo that accumulates will start dripping down the inside below the mech.
If you can't afford to lose you can't afford to win.

I got some springs for the hopper...

I pulled out the Bill Validator and reseated it...  first time I've seen any life from it... it actually tried to do something... but it sounded like some gears or something... I don't see any thing jammed...  I lifted up the tilt up part... I see the belts moving back and forth.. but when I close it and stick a $1 in it doesn't do anything...  I pulled the cash can out to see if that would help... that seems to disable the BV completely... I'm guessing there is a limit switch that only allows it to work if the cash can is in place...  I'll try and get a video of it...

for the arm lever...  I'm pretty comfortable understanding how mechanical things work... but it sure helps though when I can see what's goin on... getting back in there to see the slot arm mechanism is tricky...  I did peek my head back there...  saw some orange stuff...  but I need to take some pics of it so I can see what's going on back there...

I found a coin comparitor to buy... hopefully that will take care of the buzzing...

If the bill head is not lit you will need a SET chip to activate it and get it to accept bills.
See Rick’s FAQs on our home page  - bottom right to see the use of the set chip.

Make sure at least one of the bulbs in the yellow bill bezel are good first.
To test a bezel bulb, you can always swap with the denom .25 cent lamp.

It sounds like your bill validator has power going to it.
What you may of heard was the bill stacker in the cashbox trying to find "home" position.

The software for the validator may have never been updated though.
Try small-headed one dollar bills for now.
See if you can get the acceptor to pull in a bill, as you break the optic beam when inserting it.
Inserting a bill, or any piece of paper really, into the front edge, should turn ON the bill validator motor at least.
If not, that's a very good sign that you need to get the proper SET chip to enable it, as Jay suggested.

I've ordered the chip set to reset the bill validator...

I'll let you know once I've tried that... I've got a trip coming up... so it might be a week or two before I get a chance to work on it and send another update... :)

Thanx everyone for your help...
I'm going to donate to the site when I get back home to support the site...
