MEI are a pain!  The MEI plastic cash box has optics which are a plastic light pipe that is sensed by the head. The clear plastic inside the cashbox gets dirty and does not work properly causing intermittent errors. Best thing is to disassemble the inside of the cashbox and wash the clear plastic parts with mild soap and water. This will end the errors as long as the head and PCB behind the head are working properly.

I'm NOT kidding you Sunrise....I've seen the guys in slot warehouses throw these plastic MEI cashboxes into the sink with soapy water then just plainly leave them on the edge to dry.....lol
