First Slot Machine-Triple Diamond 5 reel

Just picked up this machine, 5 reel triple diamond. Had a few error messages displayed. One solution was to replace the 3V battery on the MPU. Turned off the power, pulled the plug and the MPU. Replaced the 3v battery and put the MPU back into the slot and ensured the seating. Plugged it back in and nothing. Am i missing something? Coincidence that the power supply just went bad? What is the 3.6v rechargeable battery on the MPU used for?

Depending on the model of your MPU, if the green varta battery is discharged the mpu will not boot.  What leds are lit on your mpu as you power on.  Also the green varta battery (Rechargable barrel type battery) is nothing but a headache as it leaks as it ages, it is best to remove it.  If you have a newer 1270 enhanced MPU (the backplane connectors are the same size on these) there is a couple of components you have to remove in addition to the battery.  If you have a 500 series mpu (backplane connectors are different sizes), you just remove the battery.  Once that battery leaks it causes all kinds of damages where you start getting door open errors.

Thanks for that info, it really helps.  There are no leds lit on the MPU when power is applied. I don't have schematics yet and didn't know if there was a logic signal from the MPU to start the power supply.  I guess i'll pull the  power supply and bench test it.

Yeah, no lights on the MPU no power or a short.  I would look at fuses also.
