williams BB2 no top box communication, and how the heck do you open the top?

had 2 dead cpu batteries. did a clear, set up , etc.  all good except no top box communication error. i tried all sort of things to get in the top box. it looks like the monitor is hinged on the right, and opens from the left? i could find no release lever or lock , and it wouldnt move, except for the bottom left corner of the monitor came out a bit. whats the trick? also, once open , there is a battery up there? what to do about the error message?

What game have you loaded to your BB2?

This is often just a setting you disable in the game setup when you don't have a top box on your machine.

Top box doesn't mean top monitor.

Well it's your lucky day!

Just go into the Game settings, scroll to the bottom of the list of game options as most of the things there can't be changed.

And you'll find "Top box" set to "enabled".

Tap it so it says "disabled", save and exit.

Problem solved, game will run normally.

This assumes you loaded Ruby Slippers...

The other Wizard of Oz games require a TSE box only found on older BB1 machines.

Or in a BB2, you need a TSE "Fooler card" so the game thinks you have a TSE box.

Then those will play, but you won't have any top screen video.  Just the main screen.

But with Ruby Slippers you can simply disable the top box option in game settings, and have both screens active.  It's one of the better BB2 games.

i called my friend, and over the phone was he able to disable the top box feature. it works now and takes money, except all the panel buttons dont work.  i had set it to standard, but there are a lot of options, too many to throw darts at. anyone know what setting is correct?

If you have OLED buttons you choose USB OLED buttons. 

If you have the smaller static buttons you pick static button deck.

If they’re static buttons and it’s set to static on the machine you’ll need to check your button wiring.

The USB OLED button deck only has a power plug and a USB cable connecting it to the CPU.

im losing my little bit of hair left.  first, cant get the buttons to work. they are oled.   the cable is seated both ends, and the panel is getting power, i can see little green leds on the back of it.  there are a couple of button options. standard. oled.  8 button top oled. 8 button bottom oled. 14 button oled. there is one other i cant remember, not to do with oled.  none work. the panel has 13, not 14  buttons. 6 top, 6 bottom, one large one. most of the settings, you get a message at the top right corner checklist, and it will say setting doesnt match buttons. the settings that the message goes away, it doesnt work.  that being said, it also cant be played with the touch screen. screen works, but no max bet, or spin option.  i put money in it, and it put up the credits. cant pick a denom, volume, help. but cant play.  i tried to cash out by printing a ticket. it made the sound, but no ticket. the got an error " print complete flag time out" . cant get rid of it, now it rejects the paper. it did print a test ticket when i first set it up. with credits on it, i cant do much in the menus. cant print out to remove the credits. could clear again, but it takes a long time, too long to just be throwing darts, setting wise. didnt see any option to clear printer errors.  im stuck on whats to no next. thanks

You have a lot going on here.

Kinda have to deal with one at a time until they're all cleared.  And ya, it's easy to get frustrated!  But once fixed you'll likely be able to resolve them if it happens in the future.

For the buttons, when you load the game and set it up, the button deck type has always been preselected and correct when I load a game.  No number of buttons option, just simply OLED USB.  If the message clears about doesn't match buttons, it's correct.  When a game is loaded it reflashes the deck for that game, so once you clear and load a game and set that for the type, when you exit and all other listed issues are cleared and you close up the machine, it should continue with configuration and flash the button deck.

If that doesn't work, something's wrong with the button deck, or the connections to it.  But there's only two connections to check.  USB cable from the deck to the CPU, and the power plug is connected (and getting power).

For your printer, if it tried to print, the printer settings are ok.

But...  I remember that error!  After it happens once you don't forget, lol   

Yor tickets have been fed into the printer upside down or reversed.  It will still pull them in, but you'll get that error anytime you print a ticket.   There are marks on the tickets that need to be face up and should be towards the start of the ticket itself that's feeding into the printer.  That's how it knows where a ticket starts and ends.  All ticket printers feed that same way I believe. 

Fix the way they're feeding in and your printer should print fine.  Pic showing the orientation of the first ticket fed into the printer should be.  Right from my BB2. 

For whatever reason the file system turns this pic 90 degrees.  Rotated it to adust and then it didn't rotate it so it was still turned 90 degrees.  lol

i think the button deck is no good. my friend called the place he bought it, they think the same. i think hes going to buy a deck.  it looks like a pain to change, hope not.

If it's an OLED button deck, nah.  Takes about 10 mins to swap at the most.

It looks like it's solid in there, but take a few screws off the back of the main door and it slides right out...

Then just plug the USB cable and power cable in, slide it in, reattach the screws and it's done.

i just looked on spin inc. the oled panel is 600 bucks! the regular one is 75.00.  can the 75.00 one be used? would the harness be there?

Yep,if you wanted to switch to a static button deck you would need the wiring harness for it unless there are a bunch of connectors are in your machine now with a static button harness still there from it having a static deck before and being upgraded.    Also, there are some games that require the OLED button deck.   But not many. 

Spin inc usually charges the most for parts... 

Even on eBay BB2 OLED button decks sell for $400, and they may not be in great condition..

So if you intend to replace it, better to get one that's like new from GET-T for $395 instead of one that's in an unknown condition.

Either can be done but the OLED button deck looks a lot better than the static buttons.  And no wiring is needed.  Just the USB and power connectors.
