Bally 1088 intermittent pay

All payouts correct,  machine has been working fairly well.  Sat unplayed a few months.

On non-wins,  machine is now intermittently paying one coin.

Looks like the hopper momentarily powers up, and occasionally coin drops.

What could I look at?

Possibly the payout relay on the back of the hopper.

is this a factory 1088 or a conversion to a 1088?

if it's not switches on the payout relay with too small a gap per david's suggestion, is it the new style hopper with the motor underneath or the old style with the motor on the side?

I’ll double check the hopper layout,  but I think it has the motor on the side.

Any particular switch on the hopper relay to pay attention to?

if it's a jackpot-only style machine (infrequent but all larger payouts) and it's an old-style hopper, you may have a hopper mixer relay that powers on some non-winners and churns the coins in the hopper.  The override solenoid should be unpowered and divert coins back into the hopper bowl when that happens tho, so in that case it'll likely be a problem with the override solenoid and the bits around it near the coin exit from the hopper.

the two redundant switches on the payout relay that power the hopper motor have white (50) and white/blue (52) wires on them, so see if those switches have too small a gap and the shock from the reels indexing are blipping them closed.

I looked at the gaps,  don’t see anything obvious.

It’s a standard win machine not a JPO.

The micro switch on payout counter is broken.  Could this be related?

jackpot only kinda means the game pays less frequently but the pays for wins are higher.

if you have cherry pays or similar that pay 2 coins, it's not a jackpot-only game.  if the minimum pay is 10 coins, it's considered jackpot only.

the missing lever arm on the microswitch would cause the machine to shut down during payout because it doesn't think the payout counter is stepping up.  The shutdown can be fiddled with my changing the timeout on the safety motor be the transformer or the circuit could be disabled completely.  For home use, the safety doesn't matter unless you are letting people keep whatever coins come of the game.  Worst that can happen is a payout problem dumps out the entire contents of the hopper to a pretty happy player.

if you have a hopper with the motor off to the side, you probably have a converted machine.  Can you post pics of the entire front of the game and the top of the hopper?

Ok. I’ll look at the payout relay some more.

Other than the intermittent 1 coin issue,  all other pays are correct.
