Question answered. The door display does not blink off for 61 > 61-1 sequence.
I still suspect t he EEPROM.

Depending on how the door optics was bypassed the NPN transistor on the main MPU board that drives the door emitter optic could have been shorted.

The flashing number in the Coins Played window is just saying that the door had been opened, and now it's closed.  It remains flashing until the next paid game, much like the bottom candle light.  Some SP chips do the flashing Coins Played number thing, others don't.  It's generally mentioned in the PSR if the SP chip supports that.
