Bally 831 Problems.... Reels Stop Immediately without Spinning

The reels don't get a chance to spin after the kickers hit the Reels. They are stopped before they even get a chance to spin at all.  I lubed everything up, I don't see anything that is stuck.


Could it be a Cabinet / Handle problem ? There is a flat "lifter" pawl in the rear by the handle assembly with roller wear marks on it. I don't think it's working properly.


                Also, of course,  I broke one of the male round pins (Pin Block) on the rear of the reel bundle from taking it in and out a thousand times trying to find the problem.  Can someone help ?  Thanks,  Tom

Check to see if the clock fan is spinning and or the clock is not turning.
No clock instant stop.

Then check the reel kickers to see if they are trying to kick the reels.
Also the stop arms above the kicker have to move out of the way.

I cannot get the mech to cycle on the bench. What am I doing wrong ? Clock seems ok, spinning like it should, but cannot fully cycle the mech. When I attempt to cycle the mech with a large screwdriver ,I cannot complete the cycle. It goes partially down and seems to stop or jam. I've had this machine for thirty years and never had a problem. I'm stumped.

Sounds like the air cylinder in frozen up.
That’s the white or silver tube on the right side of the reel mechanism.
Has the J bar push lever going into it.


And or the lubricant on all the moving parts of the reel mechanism has solidified.

After many hours of frustration and trying to get the Mech to cycle properly, I've found the trip "L" bracket (right side ,bottom, very rear of the mech)  that locks the wipers back and out of the way so the reels can spin was misadjusted. On the right side {rear} of the mech a large black bellcrank has a very worn roll lock hole ( a lot of rotational play before it moves the shaft it's (pinned) attached to ), not allowing the wipers to lock back and also not allowing the kickers to trip.    So far I'm making some headway. I'll keep bench testing it. I still need an 18 pin reel bundle male connector. Need to locate one from someone who has some parts machines. Thank you for your help in locating the problem. Could not have made any headway without your guidance. Very much appreciated.......Tom

I need to clarify.    The reel bundle wiper/stop arms were not being "cocked" into the rear most condition. They would engage immediately
not allowing the reels to spin when the handle is pulled. After hours and hours and having the reel mech in and out hundreds of times what I found was a BROKEN ROLL PIN in the bellcrank /shaft assembly on the right side lower rear of the mech.
With a 1/4" of rotating play before the shaft would rotate ,  pulling down the handle would not rotate  the shaft enough to reset the reel wipers . They would not lock back into position allowing the kickers to spin the reels.
    Seems to be working good now.   Still need the 18 Pin Male connector I broke for the back of the reel bundle.  Any sources I could try ?   Thanks..Tom

Nice job finding that broken roll pin. You can find the 18 pin beau plug here at KLar. Go to parts, then Bally  electromechanical parts. I know they sell them as sets or separate pieces. If you have not yet serviced the white air cylinder, I would put it on my do list.
