 An S2000 quit during play and the VFD states "netplex link down". Anyone else ever had this problem? What can you suggest?

Probably the MPU or the PSU.  I would start with swapping out the power supply (behind the reels).

First check the screw on the left and make sure it has not come loose.

 Hello - Of course it wasn't the screw. Of course it wasn't the PSU. Replaced the MPU 502 with a 504 and no luck. Are the 502 and the 504 interchangeable?
How about it, old wise one?

Could be a failed or failing netplex device like the printer or DBV. If the error won't clear, try removing those devices from the programming and see if that fixes it. Or simply check for loose plugs first

Which LEDS on MPU are lit during power up etc.
Post pictures of them if you need to

Could be how well the MPU seats into the motherboard try removing and re-inserting MPU into place a few times.
Pressing firmly each time.

Disconnect and reconnect each connector going to motherboard

Lastly you may want to remove motherboard and inspect for damage to the traces etc
One screw will let you remove the metal shield, its at the bottom near the front
Slide cover forward then up towards reels then remove
Then you can remove the 6 or so screws to access both sides of motherboard.

Inspect motherboard for damage
