I went out and tried it again, without resetting the power supply (I DID give it a few strong words, though)

...and it went through the whole startup cycle, I had to reset it and hold the button, etc.

I will try to replace the 2032 battery and see if that helps.

Open Questions:
1. What does j/p mean?
2. Closure M? Is this one of the I/O lines, and do you know which one?

J/P is jackpot key

Closure just means the door was just closed.

Yes replace the 2032 battery and go thru same procedure again.

Well, it now seems that it is stuck in bad power supply mode for good. Nothing I tried made any difference.

- reseated reels
- reseated power supply
- removed power supply and blew it off with compressed air
- reseated MB
- reseated I/O cards

No love. I was so close, too.
Do power supplies fail very often?

Unplug all of the 24v connectors on the fluorescent ballasts. If it still doesn't work, I'd go with a bad Power Supply. They aren't that expensive, and good to have as a spare.

Dumb question, but how do I get into the upper compartment? I looked briefly and didn't see a way to get into it. Is there a trick? Same for the power supply - I removed the mounting bracket, but the board looks captive inside the perforated sheet metal and I don't see a way to get the board out. I know there has to be one, but it isn't obvious...

I disconnected the ballasts from the power supply (Except for the fluorescent in the upper compartment), and still no life. Is the classified section here the best place to search for power supplies? Are there different models to be aware of, or are all "IGT S2000" power supplies compatible?

Finally, is there a wiring or schematic diagram available for these machines? I've seen snippets in various places on the forums, but nothing downloadable or available for the whole thing.

Update: I have replaced the power supply with a tested good one, and the machine came to life. Yay!

Now, after turning the j/p key several times, pushing the reset button, and closing the door it tells me:
- Main Battery Low
- Closure M
- Call Attendant

It won't accept bills and I cannot go much further.

I can access the attendant menus:
1. Accounting
2. History
4. I/O Tests

I have already changed the CR2032 coin battery on the main board - are there other batteries? What should I look at next, if it keeps giving me this error?
It seems like something isn't being carried across reboots, because I have to go through the same process each time I power it up:
- RAM Error (Loud beeping)
- Turn j/p key
- etc.

Don't turn the Attendent key...push on hold the little white button on the power switch box...could be in front or behind it.
From there you go into the options settings

Do some reading in the s2000 section on how to set up your machine thru the settings...>>>

So I tried not turning the j/p key, and the RAM ERROR message never clears, and no options menu comes up. The only thing that I could do to influence it was to turn the key.

After more reading, I found this thread: http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=8978.0

I pulled the MB and checked for voltage at the RAM chips - No voltage. Battery is brand new and 3.18V. I un-mounted the MB, and on the back side you could easily see that the battery holder has been repaired or replaced, since there was solder flux around the connections from someone working on it.

I re-soldered the + lead on the battery holder, re-seated both RAM chips, and was able to get voltage showing up at the chip!

Put it all back together and... No errors!

Played my first dollar's worth of credits...

It felt good.

Thanks to everyone that helped me out on this. I think my biggest challenge was not knowing a thing about the machine, how it operates, how to make it work, what to expect, etc. - and this forum has been amazingly helpful, as have all of you. Thanks for putting up with my stupid questions...

Things left to do:

Polish the chrome (Or SS)
Bring it in from the garage
Find the Options menu
Repair the connector to the tray speaker, someone mashed the pins when they put it back in.
Convert to LEDs
Add Coin capabilities
TITO?
Figure out how to get into the upper compartment.
Ideas?
Other games?

trying to find that connector may be challenging, what I typically do is remove the belly door switch connection, bypass the switch, and use that set of connectors to make the connection for the tray.

as for getting into the top box: the short panel to the right of the printer has a indentation in the top metal part of he cabinet, usually you can use this as a point to pivot the panel out of its place. sometimes it will not come out easily, if this is the case, use a flatblade screw driver and gently pry the panel out, start at the far right side where you can get a starting point. WHILE DOING THIS OBSERVE THE BRACKET THAT THE GLASS REST ON, MAKE SURE IT IS HELD IN PLACE AND DOES NOT MOVE AROUND, IF SO, BE EVER SO VIGILANT AS YOU CONTINUE. ( YOU DON'T WANT THE GLASS TO FALL OUT)
once the panel is out, pull out the printer and find two areas where you can put your fingers underneath the glass and gently push it up into the top box, once it clears the tabs on the bracket where it rests pivot it toward you and remove, as always keep the glass in hand or you could have a problem if it falls out!.

I may have some extra connectors for the tray speaker. They are molex. Got them from mouser.com.

If I have them in my parts box I can send them to you free of charge. Youâ€™ll probably need to buy the pins for them unless you can remove them without damaging them. I have part numbers for those too. Male and female.

IGT used two types of connectors for the tray speakers. Originally they were using the Minifit jr type (bigger typically white connector), then they moved to the smaller Microfit Jr type (smaller usually black connector). I have machines with both types.

Ah, interesting. Is it possible to use the bigger white connectors to replace the old black ones? Will they still snap into place or is the bracket different?

That's why I did the modification with that connector. no parts to order, no shipping, no special tools to remove pins, 5 minutes and you are finished and it works!.

The brackets are different, the connectors are of different size, so one does not fit into the metal bracket the other does. If the connector is white you need the minifit one, if it is black, you need the microfit one.

I use the method suggested by Jim. There are only two types of connectors on these. Those that work now, and those that will get crushed eventually. Keep it simple.
