Bally 5500 error after safe ram clear ?

Hi,  I performed a safe ram clear using clear chips.  I followed the procedure twice and got the same results each time.  All went according to plan . the reels spun slowly and bumped slightly at the end and the door open code 50 came up after the procedure.  I closed the door the door code disappeared, I heard the dollar bill validator cycle and the coin shoot lever click back and forth a couple times. After that the game chimed once  and a 2.3 alternating with 0000 flash in the winner paid read out.  The red light above the coin chute is lit and the bottom part of the candle is flashing.


Does anyone have any advice on what this means and how to get the game going?

23 is coin not sensed. The coin optics are dirty. You will have to clean the optics senders and receivers and the optics Prism . If you remove the Prism , pay close attention to how it is mounted. Clean all components with a dampened cloth of water only.

I disassembled and cleaned all parts and the coin optics.  I'm still getting the 2.3. on the win paid alternating with four zeros.
Is there anything else I can try?

Hi.... No I don't.    The optics are part of the board correct?... Sorry I don't know what the boards called..
Should I try to replace them?   Would that mean that entire small board would need to be replaced?

Yes the board under the coin comparitor. That is the one you cleaned correct?

Bally calls it a C.O.D. board. "Coin Optic Detector".
Sometimes there is one large transistor (larger then TO92 body size) on the board that goes bad and causes 20 codes.
Try replacing that.

Hi I'm still trying to find a COD board but have another question..the machine looks like a $100 machine... The COD has $1.00 written in magic marker on it and the hopper has .25 written in marker in it... Does this mean it should take quarters or $1.00 coins?  I'm confused... An could there be some conflict there that is causing the 23 error?

There is more space where a dollar coin drops past the sense optics on the COD board, the block the COD board is mounted to may have that wider space and be built for a dollar coin.

It is possible a quarter can go through but miss one of the 3 optics in the COD board resulting on a 2"X" error.
Hold a quarter inside the slot of the COD board and see how much left and right space there is.
Do the  same with the coin drop casting on the outside of the door where the coin goes in and see how much space you have.
You may be looking for a narrower coin drop casting.
The COD board can be cheated by gluing a piece of "guide" plastic inside the slot so the quarter passes past the 3 optics without any slop.
