IGT S Plus Red, White and Blue Upright Slot Machine

Hello,
I have an IGT S Plus slot machine that I just got.  It had a battery on the mainboard that leaked acid down onto the backplane board and inside the cabinet.  I have cleaned it up as best I can and replaced the battery, but cannot get it to boot up.  There is no maiden spin and no error codes displayed.  I have taken a known good mainboard from a triple diamond machine and put it into the red white and blue cabinet.  It does not get a maiden spin either.   So I am assuming the backplane board may be bad.   I have also tried the mainboard from the red white and blue machine in the triple diamond cabinet.  It also does not work, so I am thinking there is a problem with that mainboard.  Lastly, I have put the red, white, and blue game and reel chips into the triple diamond mainboard and put it into the triple diamond cabinet.  It played fine, so I know the game and reel chips are good.  So I am thinking I have a suspect mainboard and a suspect backplane board from the red, white, and blue machine. 

Are there any other checks any of you would recommend?  Are there checks to debug mainboards or would it be easier for me to just get a new one?  The reason I am hesitant is that I have 3rd mainboard that I was able to try in both machines and it wouldn't work in either.  I thought it was in good working order.  But I had put it on the metal backing with the transformer from the red, white and blue machine.  So I am wondering if battery acid may have leaked onto the transformer as well, damaging it.  Are there ways to check if that transformer is good?  Any other ideas?  Thanks for reading.

The "mainboard" is more commonly called the MPU board.  The backplane is also known as a motherboard.  Did you put both the MPU and motherboard from the working Triple Diamond in the RW&B cabinet?  If so, did it work? 

When those batteries leak they tend to destroy the MPU board and the motherboard below it.  Sometimes the connectors on the cabinet wiring can also get damaged. 

Sounds like your spare MPU board has its own problems to me.

Thank you for the input.  I now tried both the MPU board and the motherboard from the Triple Diamond in the Red, White, and Blue machine and got it to play for a while.  Then I started to intermittently get a reel error 42.  I also noticed the coin comparator was not working and the bill acceptor did not take bills.  It is looking like this machine is a good candidate to punt on.

If you punt on the machine. I would ask you not toss the board(s). They can be repaired. Maybe you could send them to one of the members that repair them with that type of damage? Even if you don't want them back, or want to pay to get them fixed. The cost of shipping is modest to keep them out of the landfill or as scrap. You can part out the entire machine if you like. Or as you know, replace the boards and get it working. The intermittent errors and other problems are most likely connection/wire problems that are easily fixed. Check, disconnect, reconnect the connectors in the machine and you will possibly get it working like a champ. Just takes time and a bit of patience.

So I decided not to punt and got a new MPU board and motherboard/backplane from a vendor on this site.   Now I am consistently getting a 42 error code.  I swapped the connectors between reel 1 and reel 2 and the code changed to a 41.  So I think the actual reels are ok.  Scouring old threads now to see what the issue may be.

Bad reel, wires, or optics on that reel that moved with error.

But I did not move a reel.   I took the connector that plugged into reel 1 and plugged it into reel 2.  And vice versa.

Same thing.  Reel 2 is the problem.  You plugged it into harness 1 and error moved.

Thank you.  I put a known good reel in position 2 and the machine plays.  Is there a way to debug a suspect reel or is it  time to replace?

9 times out of 10 the problem is the emitter or receiver optic burned out on the suspect reel.

These reel optics read the cut-outs on the reel basket tabs to determine reel positioning.

I'm working on an S2000 reel right at this moment....not exactly the same but similar.

I have to find the list of parts for both machines and see if I can get replacement optics for repairs.

I have a few replacement sensors. I will post stocked part numbers for some that will work later.

PM me if you want a couple. I think I have about 6 NOS replacement sensors at the moment.

Plus - as you can see from the above post, the actual led and receiver can be replaced with ones from other sensors if needed in a pinch. If helpful I can post what and how to do that.

I replaced my burned S2000 receiver optic with one from an old S+ reel...tested...works perfect now.

I'm having trouble trying to determine exactly which "Side-Looker" Infrared LED emitters and receivers I need to fix kmarracco's reel.

I am going to find a replacement sensor and post on the forum and here in this post.

I'm thinking the entire sensor would be easier to replace for most members. Even though soldering would still be required. If I didn't have a hundred things to complete, I would try to put together a retro fit assembly if possible to make it solder less.   Some day soon, maybe. (Kind of like the replacement power supplies and the plug and play CRT to LCD replacement for the PE's that doesn't cost $500, and the ......

I have a double diamond that had the same issue with the battery exploding but didn’t realize it till I powered up the machine and it blew the bottom fuse. From what it looked like inside the machine was fairly clean except for the grease drippings from the handle mechanism. I pulled the coin hopper easily but could not get the MPU out. I ended up having to remove the hopper mount in order to pry up on the MPU and that’s when I found out the battery exploded. Now I’m thinking I’ll need to do the same thing as you and possibly the power supply too. If you don’t mind me asking where did you a replacement MPU and Motherboard?
