S+ haywire deluxe no sound.

Picked up a broken s+ yesterday.

Got it working after battery replacement.  No sound other than solenoid on reel stops.  Dipswitches 1-3 are on, all others off.

There is a static hum in speakers and volume knob does affect static, but not add any game sound.

Machine has an Sp873 type 21 game eprom.

No idea if sound ever worked.  Have other boards to try, but this one looks clean.

The humm could be a 16mhz board, does it have a physical volume control ?

The reel sounds could be a setting - what game chip ?
The game chips newer ones ignore the dip switches.....

The board does have a physical volume control, but it only increases the (fairly quiet) static.


The chip is an 873 type 21.

Take a look at this sheet, there is an option to do the sounds test.
874 should be close enough to your 873.

I have also attached the PSR SP873
PSRs are a bit hard to read as a first go but if you look at the info inside the XLS and compare it to the PSR it starts to make sense pretty quick.

I tried the sound self test a few times.  No progress.

Decided to swap to a different board, sounds work fine.

The no sound board looks  new, no obvious damage.  Any reason to keep it or try to repair it somehow?

Just curious if the static went away when you swapped boards.

The Sound Chip might be fried - I believe its socketed. So if you have a spare you can probably swap.
I believe member "Jim" might be able to get the board repaired for you.

Try replacing C43 next to the dip switches.  This is the last component in the sound circuit.  If it is open, no sound.
I solved 2 sound problems with this repair.

The static did go away when I switched boards.  That spare, untested board worked fine… for an hour.

Developed a code 41 that could not be resolved by swapping reels.

Ended up trying a few more untested boards and finally found a winner.  Working perfectly all day now.

Two of the spare boards also had the no sound issue.

I am not a soldering pro, but it would be good to get them working.  Thanks for the suggestion.
