These boards are hard to find.

Hey Cliff
There is only one IC on the motherboards (backplane) and a few resistors.
I would start by swapping that IC and then check continuity on the 8 traces that come from it to their next point of contact.

The only other thing that could go wrong is if a resistor burned or a trace broke somewhere on the board. However there have been several members who fixed problems by changing that IC.

cliffeby,

  When you say a "solid" backplane. Do you mean a working one or, one for a slant top that is basically a solid rectangular shape board?  The one pictured above is for an upright machine (board is somewhat an "L" shape.

  As Chris stated.  There are only a few components on these boards.  Also, I have had two boards that have had a bent pin in the white connectors which needed to be replaced.

  Lastly, you may want to post a "WTB" in the classified section.

Im glad you mentioned the “other” problem that can arise, people try to shove the boards into the slots before they are aligned correctly and bend the pins.

Mine is the upright version.  It's the one I've been posting about in Bad Denomination.  Alan fixed one bad trace on the EEPROM and I resoldered some others at their endpoints.  Problem could be the double socketed EEPROM which I will replace when the X24C04P chips arrive. 

J was hoping that a known good board would save me time.  Sorry to learn of his passing.

I think you are on the right track because the backplane is the one part Alan didn’t have that can cause a memory problem. Certainly if there was a bent pin on the mpu the test station would have had the same problem.
I have a backplane but I have no way of knowing if its good. It came with some boards I purchased a few years ago.

I think your best bet is to change the 8 pin.
