That appears to be a Gen 2 cable, not a Gen 2 Universal.

This is the existing cable.  Attached to printer backet, but wrong printer.

Would it make more sense to buy the printer instead of the cable-  to ensure it has the right firmware?

That cable is for a Future Logic Gen 2, the printer you have is a Future Logic Gen 2 Universal, as you can see the printer end connection is different between the 2.

You also need to match the machine harness end, there are 8, 12 and 14 pin ends on the harness.

As you noted, make sure the printer has the correct firmware for the brand of machine you are trying to put it in.
