E2000 Hopper has power but won't turn
« on: February 27, 2025, 08:01:35 am »
Greetings! First time posting here and I'm new to all this stuff but had plenty of good reads while looking for solutions, thanks to all who contribute!

I just got a 1982 Bally E2224-18 that has a few issues I've found already but it's mostly cleaning/lubing the reels etc. I took all the boards out, touched up the solder on the connectors, re-seated all the socketed chips, and tested the power supply, all voltages are good. The program is starting up and running fine and I can run the tests, but the hopper test fails showing 32, meaning no coins. The real issue is the hopper wheel doesn't turn but is trying to and is jammed somehow and the motor just hums loudly until the test is over or I hit Reset button. (video attached). Oddly enough the fuse doesn't blow, and all the other fuses tested good. I can't see any coins or anything that could be holding it back. Something internal in the gears? When I try to turn it by hand it won't move more than 1/8" either way and seems locked. I tried holding off the motor lock underneath but it still won't turn. Is it time to crack it open?

Also I tested the transistors, diodes and triac on the hopper driver board and they seem to be fine. Nothing burnt on the board, all looks like new, and I re-flowed the solder on its connector as well.

Thanks,
Ian

I took it apart, down to just the motor and the attached gear case, then plugged it back in to see if it would still be jammed. Yes it is, so I'm guessing the motor or attached gears are seized. By the look of it there is no way to separate the gears from the motor? What are the chances of finding a new motor unit? Part # E-119-455 or alternate E-119-499 from the manual. After an initial search, my chances don't look great. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  :cool_thumb_up:

You can usually grab the coin plate inside and slowly rotate the gear mech. You should be able to get it down to just the motor and gearbox. Can you hold the brake back and rotate the armature of the motor by hand?

Good news, it's working. I took it apart again and figured out how to separate the motor from the gearbox. I should've looked closer at the two screws that held the motor and gearbox together. I thought they were just for holding the brake parts on, but I was wrong and it was easy to separate them. I don't know what exactly happened, but I cleaned it out as best I could and put it back together, and it works. It runs smoothly now and fires out quarters as it should. I cleaned and oiled the reels and mechanisms, and it plays like a new machine again!

As a pinball enthusiast, I love how these things tilt for every other reason that for actually "tilting". You can tip the machine over and it won't "tilt". I guess they used that as a general term for "ain't gonna play in this state"

Game on, and thanks for the input.

Congratulations!
The key indicator to me is when you said you could hear it trying to. Thats a good sign of a motor that works but something is holding it back.

Have fun!

Chris

Thanks, and yes it seemed like something was binding and stopping the motor, I just wish I knew what it was! Something slipped out of alignment maybe, or a piece of something loosened up and fell into the bottom of the gear case when I separated it from the motor? I don't know, but it is working well and I thank The Lord for that, because I didn't seem to have much to do with it!
