Storage Authenication Error ?

Hi folks, First I have looked through all the old posts on this subject. I installed a few games on my G23, the games down loaded then I get the storage error. I can't get into the menu with the diagnostic key or Ekey. I used Windows 7 for game loading. I changed out the coin batteries.
What should I do next ? Any ideas ? Thanks.

You need to open the logic door.
Did you flip the toggle switch?
Sometimes it's just simple things.

Switch is up position. I even reset the ram memory cards like you did.

How long was the machine OFF and/or unplugged?

Not used alot. But worked fine when loading games the night before. Top battery pack I have not checked. Other batteries replaced today.

Did you load games by putting in the ekey and usb key with the game loader files and powering on the machine?

If so, and you have a 14BXX OS loaded, that will cause the storage authentication failed error and the only way to fix it is wiping and reloading.

If that's how you loaded your games.  To fix it.  Boot with your ekey and diag.  Clear NVRAM, Safe Storage, AND the drive.

Once that completes, power off and boot with the ekey and a USB drive with ONLY the OS loader file on it.  Nothing else...

When the OS finishes loading and it says to remove the loader drive/ekey, power off, and remove both the ekey and usb loader drive you used to install the OS with, and boot the machine with no ekey or any loader usb key connected.

Machine will boot normally to the initial setup screen.  Put in your ekey and complete initial setup.   Once you reach "No Games Configured", you can now plug in your usb loader with your game files and load them from the ekey menu in Setup>Game>Manage Packages.   Once they are added, you'll be forced to exit, then just unplug and replug in your ekey and you can go to Setup>Game>Enable/Disable and enable your games and their denoms/paytables.  If all other settings are ok, you'll be good to go.

Then NEVER load a game by connecting the ekey and a game loader usb drive and powering on the machine.   Sure, it will say it's loading the files.  But when it's complete and you reboot.  Your drive will be deauthenticated again and you'll have to do the whole process all over.  Only install/uninstall games after powering on fully, then using the ekey menu to do it after the machine has booted normally.   Then the "Storage Authentication Failure" error won't happen.

I never had this problem, why?  I loaded about half my games via the GK 8.3r menu, and half via system boot.  Never a single issue.  I always make sure I only load compatible games for my setup.

I have a 14BXX.  It's like 14B0D or sum similar.

Could be something with an incompatible game software, loaders, bios, or jurisdiction?
If you look at past Topics posted in the AVP section of NLG over the years, there's A LOT of people that get this "Storage Authentication" message.
I laugh at the first "fixes" and suggestions from years ago... "check the ribbon cable" ...it actually helped sometimes. Lol

If you have OS 14B0E that's the most commonly used (and recommended) I believe.

Works with the GameKing 8.1r as well.   But if you're loading the GameKing set, it's slightly different steps.  I did it once and it worked fine.  But it's slightly different.  I posted the steps last year in another post.

I don't know why the Authentication Failure occurs.  But the only way I've caused it is by loading games from boot with the ekey.  Loading normal games after boot and it fixes it and it never happens again.

Here's the GameKing load steps that has always worked for me.    I personally don't load it with other games.  But if you do, load them after loading the GameKing set by itself using the ekey menu after boot. 


For a GameKing load on AVP 3.0, it's the only one I know of that has the EZSETUP, kind of a 1 for all, and some 120 or so card games, roulette, and a few slot games but they aren't that great.  This load is mainly for the card games.

It's one package to load, but it isn't just one game, it's a package of games, a theme, and it loads several feature packages for it.

The actual GameKing 8.3R game ID is Game014-001GKA-D02 (the R indicates it has Roulette)   There is also a GameKing 8.3 that doesn't have Roulette.  Where the game ID is Game014-001NW3-D11

To entirely wipe the machine and load the OS and the GameKing 8.3 or 8.3R so all works properly, it's slightly different than loading individual games after clearing the machine and loading the OS.  You need to have the OS loader file, and the GameKing game loader file on two seperate USB flash drives.  Both must be FAT32 formatted as with any game or OS loader flash drive for family 14.

The OS loader file recommended is OS version AI014BOE, the filename can vary but will have 14B0E in the name.  The OS loader file is on one of the flash drives all by itself.  The Gameking loader file is named something like igt_full_install-PI014001GKAD02-Game-King-8-3R (or similar), it can also be named with just the game ID such as PI014001GKAD02.  That goes on the other flash drive all by itself.  They have to be on separate flash drives and the flash drives must be FAT32 formatted.

But you must have to have the OS loader by itself on one flash drive, and the game loader by itself on another flash drive.  If you're loading individual games instead this Gameking load, the steps are a little different.  If you do it with these same steps and it isn't a Gameking load, you'll end up with the machine saying the drive failed authentication and you have to clear it and do it again.

Anyone with an AVP who has a diag & ekey, should always have that OS Loader flash drive and always keep it with your diag and ekey.  As well as any game loader flash drives.  Without them, you can't do a complete wipe and reload.

But to load a Gameking load, once you have the two USB flash drives with the OS and Gameking loader, you follow these steps to clear and reload it.  I've done it many times without any problems, and the EZSETUP etc. works just fine, and the proper associated packages are all installed properly.




Steps for loading for a GameKing game set.

Boot with ekey and diag key.  Wipe NVRAM, Safe Storage, and the SSD drive.

Turn off the machine, plug in the flash drive with just the OS loader 14B0E on it, and your ekey7 and power on.
The OS will install and report when it's done and says to reboot.

Turn off and remove the OS loader and ekey, and power on.  It will boot normally, and follow the prompts, plug in your ekey, etc as you complete initial config of the machine until reaching “no games configured".   

Then shut down.  Now plug in USB flash drive with only the GameKing 8.3R loader, as well as your ekey, and power on.  That will load the GameKing set and it's feature packages.   Once it reports the load is complete.  Power off, remove the loader and ekey.

Finally, power on again with no keys in.  No games configured will come up.  Plug in your ekey.  And in the ekey menu, you can setup individual games from the set.  Or select an "EZSETUP" option specific to a GameKing package loaded that will configure about 41 games for you as you did previously.  But this is clearing everything, I suspect there's something corrupt on your SSD drive, so this will do a totally clean load of the OS and the Game.

You can also just enable games/denominations as you choose as well, it just takes longer so the EZSETUP is quick.  After it configures, you can always edit what was set and enabled in the games if you choose.  Then you can close it up so all doors indicate they're closed, and then it should run normally.

I "think" that there are two different versions of show boot chips.   The ones almost everyone has these days is the newer ones.  But I "think" there was also an older set of show boots from way back when the older OS 14AXX was the common OS.

Don't think many have the older show boots anymore, but over the years, I think that has been what has caused quirks here and there.   I just know what always works for me as I went through all sorts of problems and figuring out what works from other posts.  So I just stick with what always works and what has always fixed things up for me.

A follow up, I did end up wiping the machine. I lost a bunch of games and the GK package. I reinstalled about 20 games I had on file.Could loading too many games cause the mass storage error? Also, how much memory does the GK package use?  Thanks for all the info guys.
