A Set Chip is needed to program / enable the bill validator.
You need a Clear Chip to bring the machine back to factory settings.
The set chip would be used later.

 :agreepost:

Agreed with Jay. A SET chip is not the same as a RAM clear chip.

Suggestions?

Are you able to install a set of known good GAME PROGRAM and DATA chips and see if that resolves the issue?

Making some progress after the clear chip.  I think my reset switch is bad.  When pressed, it only momentarily closes the open circuit. The closed circuit opens and closes as expected.

Back to where I suspected one of the chips is mismatched. That is likely where the “never before seen” error message is coming from.
Need to consult the master list of PE+ chips, its in the top posts of the category by Brian T

I used the wrong terminology - I'm new to this sport.  My switch closes for an instant, but the circuit does not stay closed while I'm pressing the button.  The closed side of the switch behaves properly - stays open as long as the switch is pressed.  Will work on the switch and report back.

Related, here's the latest screen shot.

Thats a different error than the previous picture that indicated the wrong game prom.
You might have a defective memory chip.

Chris, good thought given that my error is slightly different every time. I assume that you are referring to the CMOS RAM memory on the MPU.  My chip is a Sony CXK58257P-12L.  Its base specs are Part #CXK58257P-12L - Integrated Circuit IC, SRAM,32KX8, CMOS, DIP, 28PIN, PLASTIC.  The IGT parts manual has it as U56 RAM STATIC C-MOS 8KX8 15ONS 70600590.Looking at other PE+ boards posted on the site; I see various chips being used.

This machine had a lot of "work," and I've been fooled once by the wrong caps on the monitor board.  Do you have a recommendation for the chip?  And if it's the motherboard memory, the same question.  I can't read my MB chip.

I am no memory expert so we need someone who understands the numbering system. Its possible they just used a larger memory chip.
What is catching my eye is that the message indicates wrong game prom one minute then it says bad memory.
My PE boards are not here at the house to look at.

From the pics of the CMOS mpu chip on this site, all but one were 32k and one was 64k.  The EEPROM on the motherboard is mentioned on the site as a X24C04.  I'll order both a give them a try.

There are two cmos. One is in the MPU and one is on the small fixed motherboard.
They need to be synced.

Jay, my post above shows pictures of both chips.    I have several questions in this thread-
1. Is a 32kx8 chip the correct CMOS for the mpu.  Specs on this site show 8kx8?
2. Is X24C04P the correct mother board EEPROM?
3. Would a bad CMOS - mpu, motherboard or both cause the varying display errors shown?
4. and now - What does "synced" mean? As noted above, I have run the clear chip but can never get the reset button to produce a ding to a known good speaker.

I will post pictures of a couple of motherboards that I have in a drawer later tonight when I get home.
I am sure we should be able to sort out the memory specs from the sum of the parts.

With regards to the CMOS chips. When a game is played the results are written to the CMOS on both boards as a security feature. You can pull the power mid deal and when you plug it in again it will complete the deal etc. if one of the two CMOS chips don’t have the same info you get a CmOS error. I remember a member who replaced both of their cmos chips but they were different speeds and about every 6 or 7 games he got an error. When he changed one out to be the same as the other the issue went away.

Here are a couple of motherboard pictures.
The green ones are superboards and the brown one is the standard version.

Hopefully you can find enough comminatlity in the memory chips your looking at.
