I had LED bulbs in a GK several years ago before super bright SMD LEDs were a thing. They had a white plastic dome and they just looked like colored lights. What happened? Is it because they are using super brights for everything now?

Well the LED's I tried (they were higher voltage though) just looked like a spot in the center of the lens on the buttons.
I'm hoping these will be more diffused. If not, I will try that suggestion of making a filter out of something. At least they won't project the same heat as the incandescents.

Well... good news and bad news.
They do look good for the most part. But... it really makes a difference when you clean the label and the lens. There was a lot of yellow grime on mine. So, of course I BROKE the first one I tried to clean... careful as I was. My "BET 1" no longer works.  :hissyfit:
Still these seem to have much better diffusion than the last LED I tried. I'll definitely get a few more for the deal/draw buttons.
Now I need to post a WTB for some Fortune 2 side button lens/spring housings.

Brittle and dry-rotted plastics....Tripp Plastics is famous for that.
I'm not exactly sure who made those older rectangular buttons?
I think I have some if you want?
I'd have to take a look later when I get in.

Yes thank you! Of course, the part that broke was the piece that depresses the switch.  :banghead:

The other thing I LOVE is the heat reduction. Those little #86 death bulbs get extremely hot. I removed mine with the power on (insulated tweezers) and they were quite hot to the touch.

Yep...the heat transfers into the surrounding spring, which in turn melts the thread body.
There ARE lower wattage bulbs that run a touch cooler, but I have long forgotten, what those exact numbers were.
I remember doing some research and testing, to find a cooler bulb, but I couldn't find an incandescent lamp that was bright enough - like LEDs.
The problem back then is that the LEDs didn't have a "wide" beam...they would just emit a "spot" of light...not good for buttons.
I had found some LEDs, oh about 15 years ago? that changed colors...THOSE were very nice.
Anyways, I got mine in today from Comet Pinball...threw one in a denomination display that says 25 cents.
They work but I'm not impressed...the light is still somewhat spotty.
I like the incandescent bulb on my coin insert.
I just wish I had a gold colored coin head to match.

Hmmm... I guess the lens/label material makes a difference. I don't see any spot on mine.
BUT... I have a different bulb in for my S2000 denomination that looks GREAT. I'll fine out that bulb and let you know.

oh! I'll look right for some button housings! I forgot!  :duh:
The S2000's use different voltages...lol
Plus these, I had to bend the wire contacts on the LED bulbs, so that there was only one contact per side - or it will short out stuff.

One more picture...compare the sizes above to yours.
You can change the inserts no problem...these are colored lens.
I'll give you the switch...if the contacts are larger, it's not hard to cut with a sharp pair of pliers or file down with a Dremel tool to fit your blade connectors.

That looks right!  :yes:

I need to be extremely careful though! I'd like to clean the rest of the buttons but I'm not sure if it's worth it, especially if I break more! I have some nice plastic polish (Novus) that works great and I think would eliminate a lot of that yellowing in the clear part.

Hopefully your clear acrylic will just fit in there.
All I had were colored ones.
They're made really good...just a quarter twist turn to lock in the switch - no pulling and splitting apart the plastics.

These below may work too? Similar to what I just mailed out this morning.
You'd just have to change the bulbs and maybe Dremel the contacts a bit...sometimes the male blade contacts are wider than the IGT push-on female spade connectors.

I wonder how the yellow or red would look?  :Scratch-Head:  Blue might be too dark.

Ok here's my update. The LED's did help. BUT... what really mattered as much was the inserts in the bulbs. They were just YELLOWish anyway. Ed sent me some genuine used (haha) switches. Unfortunately the shafts were too short to fit!  :hissyfit:
But I ended up parting two out for the insert that depresses and microswitch and the insert, which were more white in color. Of course I destroyed the first one I took apart; they are so fragile!  :banghead:
I got the four switches on the right modified. They're a little on the bright side but I definitely like the result. Later down the road (maybe if I want to risk it) I may add a filter just to lessen the intensity. Or maybe find yet another LED that may put out less light.
It definitely was an ordeal taking that panel apart. You have to be very careful with the plastic cover that surrounds the back of the switches. It's basically the consistency of hardened thin bubblegum now!  :rotfl:
Last photo shows buttons brighter than they really are but you get the idea of result.
Now I have to deal with the deal/draw buttons.

UPDATE - I have "dealt" with the deal/draw buttons. MUCH easier than the side buttons. Pop lens off put in bulb, pop back on.
It's AMAZING how much cooler this thing is without all those little "heaters" in there. I'm surprised these machines didn't just spontaneously combust!  :rotfl:
MUCH BETTER than the icky yellow color they used to be!
