IGT S+ no display or reel lights
« on: February 25, 2016, 05:36:30 am »
I'm going to look at a friends S+ slot tomorrow. He said the machine has no reel lights, no lights on the display and will not play. The reels went into a slow spin when he started the machine then had a 41 code.
When he restarted it the displays are blank.
Looking for ideas and parts to bring.

Thanks

Yeah somebody will move it. Power supply? Cord loose inside etc. It sounds like the machine went dead. Fuses maybe. Hard to guess on all of it. If there seems to be power but the display isn't working. Check to make sure the harness going in it doesn't have a broken wire on the bottom side. I had a wire tie base dry out and come loose once and the wires were rubbing the top of the printer bezel and wore one in two. That shut the display down fast. I shut the door and it went off. It was the s**ts to find too.

A 41 error code makes it an S+. I would check battery voltage, things that hinder reel spin and the power cable from the motherboard to the power supply first off

Yep, 41 code is reel 1 error on an S+, if it was an S2000 it would display "reel 1 tilt" on the VFD. I'll try and fix the topic issue

Good catch, I didn't even think of that. Yeah I'm used to the 41 on an S+. Well I gave him a lot more info than he'll probably need. And he's going to drive an hour to find out it's an S+.

No biggie. Common cause for the issue you described is a bad connection on the cable from the power supply where it connects to the motherboard. One of the pins gets a little. Burnt and needs to be cleaned or replaced, usually just cleaned. No guarantee this is his problem, but it's a good place to start unless you find something obvious like a dead battery or loose plug

Contact cleaner won't do much for a connector pin that is burned or has tarnish from overheating. Best to use something mildly abrasive on it like a pencil eraser, light sandpaper, etc to shine things up. Remember there is a mating contact for the pin that probably needs cleaned too. Otherwise it will fail again in the near future.

Make sure the three fuses are good.

Call the person and ask if the reels spin freely or if they can feel resistance when the power is applied. If the male post is oxidized then I would believe this is most likely the problem.

I would get all the information you could gather before you go. find out if he got the reels to stop spinning (by turning the reset key with the door open) what do you mean by reel lights?  if its the fluorescent lamps they are 115 volt with a starter, bulb and ballast. usually the bulb starts to flicker and the starter tries to light it and eventually it is bad as well.   the displays are  digital,  usually run by the voltage provided by the board (+vb). if the reels are stopped, and there is resistance to turning them by hand, I would ask him to try and put a credit on the machine via the button on the optic board and see if the game will play.

has this machine worked in the past? a bad battery usually doesn't cause these problems, UNLESS the acid has leaked over everything and destroyed the board.

the more information you can get, the better off we could make some suggestions,  I would take a spare board, motherboard, power cable, a SS and SP chip, clear and set chip,  hopper knife, coin comp.  door optics, bulbs, starters, button bulbs  etc.

If The power harness molex connector at the motherboard is overheated and brown, you  will need the terimal pushed out of the molex connector with a molex tool or a sharp pick to slightly depress the lock on the terminal and pull it out of the connector. Then you can clean the terminal and bend it slightly to get better friction to the pin. Or you can use a torch tip cleaner to clean the terminal without removing it but you can't spring out the terminal to get a tighter fit.

From what he's telling me is he moved the machines from his game room for new carpet. When he moved it back in the reels turned slow and he had no led display. He shut it off and tried again and this time the reels didn't turn and no led.
I got an e-mail from he just now and he put the board from a working S+ in this machine and no change except when he put it back in the working machine that has no led!!
I have him checking to see if the reels have any resistance.
This just keeps getting better all the time!
I've got to learn to say NO!!

Problems after moving a good working machine are often due to bad connectors or connections. Check the power connectors on power supply and motherboard.

Generally the culprit is the 4 pin big connector on the motherboard. If that is loose or dirty. Cleaning it up with one of those white erasers usually fixes the issue. Fuses are also a common failure after something has been moved. If the insides are a bit thin then jossiling about can finish them. Be sure to check with a multimeter as a visual inspection is not always reliable.

Have never ever seen a code 1 ,  might be garbage on the display,  might have to run a clear and start over from scratch,    did you ever find out if this machine worked in the past, and how long it has been out of service?

After 4 hours I got 2 running and one that needs a mother board. Two were the power leads coming from the power supply to the board. Made up new harness and they play as they should. The third the harness was good and I checked all connections and every thing was fine. The battery was dead so I replaced it, still no change.
Finally swapped the mother board out of a working machine and the display came to life.
It's strange that these were all working till they were moved and left un plugged for a week.
Once again thanks to everyone for the suggestions they helped me repair these.

Bob :thank_you:
