Bally 873 nickel 5 line reels out of alignment
« on: April 12, 2016, 04:29:07 pm »
i picked up a 873 ..5 line nickel. It was gummed up and full of nicoten. I pulled the reels from the sprockets and now I can not get the symbols to line up on a payout. I have looked for the longest slot and tried that. No luck. I started to try to have the sprocket with the longest slot on the right since with 5 coins it is the highest payout with three 7's diagonally. H

How can I match the reels to the sprockets?

They are label 684-58
                     684-59
                     684-60

Thanks

If those are the right reel strips, looks like you'll have to uncrimp one or all of the strips and reset them in the proper position.
When you line up the index slots for a payoff, does the machine payout? If so, I would mark the reel on the metal part of the reel with some type of removable grease pencil. Check other pay combinations until you get a good idea where the symbols should be. If yours match up, then uncrimp and move to the right position.

Let's see the front glass.  Those don't look at all like the correct reel strips to me?

there was a hole on the index plate across from the number the top of the real strip goes 180 degrees from the whole

I will say if the strips are not loose on the tins
they are probably not out of adjustment 5 line machine is very temperamental and has to be cleaned and serviced often or it will not pay right

With the disk and the reel tin put on the shaft, but no screws in, you can position the wiper arm into the DEEPEST cut, and then move your tin around until you see the 7 or highest pay on the center line.  You should see that the holes line up.  there are 4 ways to align the disc to the tin.  You'll get it right 25% of the time it would seem.
this method seems to always work for me.  It is a bit of work, but eventually you will see that the highest pay (deepest cut) and the highest win symbol are not evenly 180 degrees apart.

Thanks for tiip OR , I did try that method and did not have a lot of luck.
So by aligning the deepest cut on all 3 reels, the wipers on the back should all be at the last swipe on the contact plate board on the back of the reels.?

From what I can see all 3 reels do not have the same deep cut.I was wondering if it makes a difference , because the top right to bottom left win is the highest pay out.

I have labeled the Reels and Stop,Index Wheels in case I move them around. I was trying to get all three 7's to line up on the center line.

From what I can gather from the person I purchased it from it did work at one time. The Plastic Spiral Cam on the back of the hopper was broken. I did replace it.

I went through and have cleaned all the contact and pads on the machine. Degreaser and re lubed it.
Reels only have BAR 5BAR and 7's on it. 684 is 22 slot Stop Index Wheel and this appears to be correct on the reel tape.

Tempted to find a Glass and Reell Assembly that have more Fruit and other symbols on it.

Thanks

So the previous owner said the machine was working. I would be tempted to get it working first, as you might have to change the payout step up unit along with glass if you change the reels to fruit. Plus a little wiring.
I bought a 809-zh 1-line x-5 pay that someone just put 809-b fruit reels into and thought it might work. The 7's Bars and melons paid out OK, but the fruit and bells needed to be wired from the back of the reel mechanism all the way to the payout step up unit on the hopper. Pretty simple to do on the 809 and the payouts were the same amount. I just need to get the right glass installed and its good to go.
I'm not familiar with your machine and the diagonal pay lines, so it might be a little more complicated.
Reno or Jon could shed more light on your situation.

I also have a 809 with the black bars and 7 on the reels (black light strips). I have heard my 809 referred to as a JP only machine. See if there is a # written on the wiper boards, might be a clue if there is.

I got it working. Pays out one extra nickel, any bar or bar pays 21, but that's the next issue I will address. I have read about the things to look for.

I need to get the reels lined up. The 5 line payout seems to not follow the deepest cut slot is the center line.
The reel strips look to be original crimped strips. I wish I could find the payout matrix for the 5 line nickel.

I end up with the index disks as follows . Disk one's swipe, being lined up with the top contacts. Disk 2 second to the top and disk 3 top contacts. Then the reels come no ware close to 7's in the center.

Aaaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!

The stop disks are 684-58 to the left and then 59 and 60 as you look into the machine.

The broken plastic spiral cam on the back of the Hopper was suppose to be the only problem, luckily I bought a box of slot parts at Pheasant Run and there were a few in there and of course less cleaning degreasing and re lubbing.

I dose look like black light would make the reel strips pop. Have to give it a Go.

Glad you got the machine running. Re the extra coin, check the coin chute after the pivot arm roller. It may be dirty and is holding back a coin once in awhile giving the impression it's paying one over. Or the payout step up unit is slightly retarded and not moving off the contact strip soon enough to stop the hopper. I've found in the past if a machine has a slight problem, sometimes it smooths out as the machine warms up. Notably with the winner paid meter, it will miss or add a coin when the machine is cool. I would say the optimal operating temperature is when the front of the machine is warm to the touch.
Keep us posted on your progress.

BINGO .... thats exactly the problem I had with my 809. It would pay out fine except on occasion, it would short a coin and I could see it sitting there. Which in turn, would make it look like it paid out 1 extra next time. A bump on the side made it drop out. Cleaning the knife edge where it meets the hopper took care of it.

A clean knife is always fine.  I put them to the grinder to change the cant and make them (coins) more shelf-leaning.
You can scrape the knife with a small flat blade pocket screwdriver to do a quick fix.
Emery cloth for the die-hards.

I spent a couple of hours with the index reels last night and I am having no luck. I cannot seem to get the 7's to line up on the center line.
Dose anyone have the
7  5 BAR BAR Reels?: what slots / were are the 3 swipes on the back, when the 7's are in the center from left to right as you are looking at the machine.  I am so close but so far away with this machine.

Thanks

RJ

Greetings RJ

I have an 873 which is similar to yours, as shown in the attached photo. The model is 873 C. If yours is the same model with just different reel strips maybe I can be of assistance.

RJ, I thought I posted but it did not take.
My apologies, the 5 line XX machines do have different cuts than the others.
So, 7's will probably not work, again I am sorry to mislead you.
You will find that your wipers are probably sectioned into 5 different cuts (on the back the foils are cut).  this allows for 5 different lines to be read.  These are selected through the odds disc, and you will note there are some 90 type wires (grey) which power each of these cuts on your 3rd reel board.  Try to isolate the plain 90 wire (grey)  Other pay wires there are probably 91, 92, etc..
You may get some relief if you use a sharpie to mark each of the cuts as you index them.  Then, later, you can look at your reel strips perhaps and see if you notice a pattern.
Again, I don't have a 5LXX in front of me so am of no help.  You should use RDaniels machine to puzzle this out.
And please, guys, if you figure this out please post for the rest of us.
My bad.

Locate the 90 grey wire on the 3rd reel wiper contact board. Usually near the top closest to the rear of the machine. Index the 3rd seven and there should be continuity between the two. Set the middle 7 and ride the test lead over the solder lugs or the contact buttons until there is a signal of continuity. Then the same for the 1st reel. This should work for every line horizontal and diagonal and the 7s should align for a pay off. I'm speculating the reel cuts are at different depths to keep the machine from paying on scattered 7s. Also keep in mind the reel disc cuts don't not vary that much as the movement from contact to contact is minimal. So check the rollers at the end of the wiper arms for wear, missing or askew. This could cause a misaligned wiper to contact resulting in a no pay.
If you have time attach some photos of the wiper boards and the 7s on the center line.
Hope this might help.

Disclaimer, these are just my thoughts based on what I have gathered from previous post on your topic.
Not to be taken as the perfect solution for your machine. Just guidelines from my very limited knowledge.

Wow ,thanks everyone,

Your Reels look the same. Are they 684,s? 22 spaces....

I will dig into this tomorrow night. I will print this thread  out and read through your explanations and suggestions. (I still like stuff in print) To nice outside in Chicago, have to do some shuffling around, I picked up a VLC machine I just recapped  the monitor and I  want to see if I have to send the boards in for a battery change out and reset.

Thanks again for your help.
