Changed eprom and can't clear errors

Hey everybody, I changed the SS chip in my S2000 D/D. I am using the SB001000 setup. Put in the reel chip for a D/D Deluxe, to see how the game plays. I'm getting the errors (to follow) but it won't finish up and then boot. System error-turn key  SS Eprom invalid-turn key  some critical data may be lost-turn key  push test switch 2-3 seconds after that the please close main door. Then initializing, testing memory, call attendant open door alarm and it starts all over again. I gave it the benifit of the doubt and tried 10 times last night removed and re installed eprom, then 8 more times this morning. No change...........Got the chip from one of our members. I'm stuck. Clear time? Or do I need to change the SG chips because of the nudge factor?

What speed is the ss eprom?  Do you have another SS eprom to see if you get the same boot sequence.  I've never tried an SS eprom on an S2000 before, so I don't know what the error sequence is when booting up a changed eprom.

I don't know what the speed is on the new one. I dropped the original on the floor and when I picked it up it caught in the carpet and bent one of the legs. And of course you know what happened when I tried to straighten it out. Now I will look in my chip drawer, there should be a Triple diamond chip. It should be close enough to check the boot up sequence. This seems to be kind of a first, so it should be interesting. Mine has always had the SB001000 setup but I've never changed Eproms before. We'll see what I have.

Like Rick is getting at .. the SS chip is to slow processing info for the S2K boards. I would suggest changing to SB100088 for a 2 coin version or an 89 or the 3 coin version and get rid of the SB001000/SS combination.

If I am stuck using a SS bin file for some odd reason I use a fast processing 27C512 with the SB001000. I understand that SS chips on S+ boards uses a 27C64.

Yes Ken I think that's, at least, part of the problem. The new chip is a 27C64Q and says 250 underneath it. If that's 250 nanoseconds it's going to be way too slow for an S2000. I had an old chip from my Triple Diamond an SS4788-87%. I put it in and didn't get the "invalid" message.  Just crc mismatch etc. I cleared the errors and it went to Netplex config. and booted right up. At least now I have a good idea about the correct boot sequence, Thanks to Rick, great idea. I will see if I can get a better set up for it and try again. If nothing else, I can document some of this as it's a bit of a different experiment.

Well I checked the original eprom and it's a 27c64 with 120 below that. It worked and the new one is 27c64 with 250 below so I'm guessing the new one is twice as slow as the old one. I'll see what I can come up with.

Update: Looks like he has the 27c512 eprom. So we'll see if we can make a faster one.

Shaggy, if you can get the SB100088 or 89 mentioned above you'll have payback percent control built into the chip. No more getting a specific chip to match the payback you want Member RB might be able to help with that

For S2000's you need 120 or better.  Sometimes you get lucky and some 150's work, but 250 is way too slow.  Most folks I've heard use the 27c512's which are easier to get in the 120ns speed and just stack 8 copies of the SS bin to burn into the 512 chip, or burn the chip with an offset.  I don't remember the offset range, but I'm sure is posted here or on the old site.

Thanks Cowboy, yeah he PMed me and we talked about that. I'm going to need about everything to make a switch. This was just a little experiment to see how the game played. I figure if I like the game play I will have to assemble all the parts together as the kits are pretty hard to find. There are lots of advantages to using the regular S2000 SBeprom over the SB001000.

Got the 512 Eprom and it works perfectly. Went right through the errors pushed the test button closed the door and up and running. Works very good. Even with the wrong strips it's fun to play. Thank you guys for the learning experience!
