You are right, the documentation is backwards for the reel sound.  Ran in to that myself many times now.  Mostly with documentation for the SP1271.

The machine has a 10 mhz mpu board in it with the 'blue volume adjustment pot'. If I set the sound option to 2 - 1,  there are no game sounds, only the clicking noise(the handle solenoid) when the reels stop. When I set the 2 - 0 option, machine play is silent. But put it in test mode(50) and it's loud and clear. So now the board is on it's way to Ohio(Midwest Slots) to be tested. I'm ordering a clear chip too. we'll wait and see.

Looking forward to hearing what they find out. And if necessary they can install another pair of Reel and Game chips, plus a cmos ram chip.

received the board, verified the problem, tried different chips, no change, put the chips etc. on a new board on his tray, still the same problem, thought it was the transformer on the tray, replaced it, still the same problem. finally cleared the board in the machine, using the 1271 SP chip, got the 65_3, changed it to 65_1, entered the menu, set it to 2_0 and tried it, only reel solenoid action, set it 2_1, got full sound, coin in, and reel sound. tested everything, works 100%.

Board in the mail today.

Thanks for that report Jim. So it appears there was something goofy in the cmos ram that was causing the sound problem and clearing ram took care of it.

Jim from -Midwest Slots- had to perform an 'All Clear' to get the sound back, but when the board shipped back to me the sound was gone again. Luckily I ordered an All Clear(IVC123)chip,because I had to clear it AGAIN and repeated the steps that Jim took and the sound is back AGAIN.

Thanks for that update, this is a puzzling problem on why it happened in the first place, and then it happened again. Your sound settings in the TEST menus looked correct. Let us know about any further developments or problems, someone else might have this happen and your information could be very helpful.

When the owner of the machine comes back to pick it up and takes it back to Oregon the sound will be working. I just hope it keeps working for him.

I don't use the SP1271 chip on 10 meg. boards, exactly for this reason. In my opinion, for home use, I don't find it USER FRIENDLY.  After clearing the machine, when power was first applied, I got the code 65_3, checked page 12 of the PSR, Tilt Codes, it stated that this had to be changed either by using a set chip or changing it to 65_1, to restore the machine options.  After doing this, the sound options were there and  could be changed accordingly. 

I always use a SP731 for 10 meg. boards, you don't have to deal with the above, and you can scroll through the menus using the button deck and never have to use the jackpot reset key. and if you want to check reel strip alignment versus the glass, all you have to do is press one button and it is automatically done, no entering positions or whatever .

Since it is a 10 Meg board, if I replaced the SP1271 with a SP731 would the machine still work with the existing theme? It's a two coin Triple Play.

the game Triple Play is a TYPE 0 game, SP731 will handle that game, look on the SP chip itself, it will have the games it can handle written on it. usually four or five numbered types.
