Extra Bet Button, Does it Need a HUB too?

I'm installing an Extra Bet Button panel. The EBB connects to a board and that board
connects to a hub, that one to the mainboard. Does anyone know if the HUB is mandatory?
Or is it possible to connect the EBB RJ 45 to the mainboard. (maybe with an UTP cross cable?)
Do all connections use normal RJ 45 Network cables?
Any help / directions are welcome,

The hub is not mandatory.  Coonect the Ethernet cable to the backplane and apply 5V to the animator board 2 pin connection.
