IGT S+ Error 20-50?
« on: April 01, 2018, 07:38:18 am »
Unplugged my S+ Double Diamond while I was remodeling the room.  Turn it back on today, and WINNER PAID is alternating 20..50 and the COINS IN is flashing 2.    Ran all of the routine tests, and checked all of the diagnostics and flip cards, and cannot find any info on this error.   Anyone else ever seen this one?

That's not an error.  It's waiting for you to insert a coin or bill.

The Winner Paid window is indicating that the last win (whatever is showing on the reels) paid 20 coins, and then someone hit the "Cash Out" button and it paid out 50 coins (the win of 20 plus 30 credits that were already on the machine).  The flashing number in the coins in is indicating that the machine had been powered off and is now back on.  It will stop flashing after the next paid game.

Thanks...    What you are saying makes sense.   The machine however, will not accept coins/bills, and the "Insert Coins" is not lit.  So you are saying the indicators I am seeing are not showing any error code related to the real problem?

When you close down on the door latch, does the number change in the "Coins In" display window at all?
The number should change when the door is opened and closed.
If not, then I'd be checking the door optics.

Yup, optics are good.  When I open the door, coins in goes to solid "0".  Close the door and about 5 seconds changes back to alternating 20-50, and "2" flashing in "Coins In"

Alternating flashing numbers of the [20]  & [50] is not an error code.
All that is showing is the last payout and credits won.
The machine is waiting for another game to be played like knagl said earlier.

Open the door & press the service coin button on the coin comparitor.
Each press will give you a credit on the display panel, then press the start button.

If this works and the machine plays while in service mode, then check if you have the correct coin in the coin comparitor and try with door closed with correct coin to try to get the machine to register a credit.

If that doesn't work, check coin comparitor wiring for broken black ground wire on harness.
(I'm surprised you didn't get an error [12] meaning low battery.
It almost sounds like you lost bill acceptor settings.
But let's concentrate on getting the machine to accept a coin first.

You answering my question gave us a better idea by details of operation.
We need better details so I suggest that you take some pictures or a video and show us what you see...that would help us help you.

or

you can do some searches within the S+ forum topics of this website and I'm sure you'll find some answers on coin acceptance problems.

Always wondered where the "Service Coin" button was. :duh: .. found it, and with the door open, the button works, and everything seems to function normally and the front panel button lights work as expected.  Winner paid and credit displays are normal and correctly register a hit.    Once the door is closed, the machine resets, the reels go back their original positions and the 20-50 re-appears after about 15 seconds.   The green light on the comparitor does not light (never has on either of my S+ machines).   The bill validator also does not light, and coins are rejected.    I was originally thinking that there was a power issue, but the fact that the buttons all light up in service mode eliminates that.  Reseated all of the connectors on the comparator and cleaned them all with contact cleaner - no difference.  If it was just coins, I would think that the problem was with the comparator, but with both the coin and bills failing, makes me think the issue is further in.  I also reset the main board, cleaned all connections and re-seated it several times.  Checked the main fuses, and all test good.

My other S+ has a different model comparitor(MC-40 on this one, the other one is CC-16-D), but the connections and form looks the same, so I might swap it to see if it makes any difference.

The information you provided answered several questions, and I think I'm getting closer.

The light on the coin comparitor NEVER comes on when the door is open on an S+ machine. That's just the way the S+ is built. On other machines (S2000?) I think the coin comparitor light may come on when the door is open.

There are 2 pushbutton switches inside the machine:

1) The white TEST/Diagnostic pushbutton is for entering the setup menus so you can change certain settings and view others. You can also do several test functions, like make the hopper payout 10 coins, or check that the coin optic sensors are working, and various other tests.

2) There is a small pushbutton switch in the corner of the coin optic board below the coin comparitor. This switch will let you put test credits on the machine while the door is open, and you can test the machine by pressing the SPIN button on the front of the machine. When you close the door these test credits will be eliminated/erased.

The flashing "20-50" makes me think the machine wants to finish paying out from the hopper. Do you have enough coins in the hopper? If not put some in there and close the door, maybe turn the reset key and let the machine finish the payoff it wants to do.

Hmm... I checked the hopper, and it  has about $100 quarters in it, so there should be enough to pay out.

The hopper could be jammed with a bent coin. I too am thinking 20 coins paid out of 50. Had you cashed out? Or are the reels on a hit for 50 coins? Possible settings are low and only paid 20 coins and rest are waiting hand pay. Pictures would be great. You need low resolution to post here.

Do you ever hear the hopper motor running, like it is trying to payout? It will give up after a few seconds if something is wrong and no coins can get dispensed but you should hear it running for a short time until it times out. Like elvis said, look over the hopper carefully, post photos of it, especially the upper area of the hopper where the coin wheel carries the coins to the top. Photos will save everyone a lot of time on a problem like this. There could be a coin jam-up, or a bent hopper knife or some other reason your hopper is not able to finish the payout.

The flashing "20-50" makes me think the machine wants to finish paying out from the hopper.

I too am thinking 20 coins paid out of 50.

That's not how it works.  My description earlier is accurate.  If the machine was still waiting to payout coins, it would be showing an error code such as 3300 (hopper empty).

I'm not familiar with the coin comparator you described, so I can't give you a lot of guidance on it other than to suggest replacing/reseating the sample coin, and adjusting the sensitivity so it is least likely to reject a coin (if there is such an adjustment -- from a picture I found of an MC-40, it doesn't look like there is).  Has this MC-40 previously accepted coins in your machine?

I'd also check to see if your Insert Coin lamp is good.  If you have another working lamp of the same type, swap in the known good lamp into the Insert Coin socket so you can tell for sure if it's lit or not.

Thanks to everyone for all of the great comments and suggestions! - I really appreciate the expertise and commitment by everyone

There is no indication that the hopper is trying to run, and there are coins in the hopper.    Lots asking for pictures.  I tried to do a video, but cannot load .".mov" here.  I tried to attach some photos, but too large for this site.  I will need to take some more in a lower resolution.

I will be happy to post photos, however there are many comments asking about different components, that I am not sure which pictures would be helpful.

At his point, I guess I should go through all of the self tests for the hopper, coin tests, and bill validator tests (All indicated here as potential problem areas) .    I can report the results here when I get them.

Just to recap the situation, with the door closed and latched what happens when you insert a coin? Does it get returned to the coin tray as a rejected coin? Of does it go into the hopper but you don't get a playing credit?

Have you tried replacing the "sample" coin in the coin comparitor? This is the example coin installed in the coin comparitor,  the machine requires you to play with the same type of coin.

If you can put "test credits" on the machine with the door open by pressing the coin optic test button then the machine pretty much is ok, the problem is probably with the coin optic boards or the coin comparitor. Did you try putting the CC-16 coin comparitor from your other machine into this machine?

I just realized something....lol
The coin comparitor.
You're saying this machine is using an MC-40.

That will never work on another machine again.

It is 12volt coin comparitor.
The S+ uses 24volt coin comparitors. ( Like the one on the other S+)

4 little screws loosened on each corner of that coin comparitor will expose the circuit board.
I'll bet you something is fried inside.  :burningresistor:
Take a peek...
I need you to give me the circuit board numbers etched upon it and I will be able to tell you if it's a compatible circuit board for your S+.

Lots asking for pictures.  I tried to do a video, but cannot load .".mov" here.  I tried to attach some photos, but too large for this site.  I will need to take some more in a lower resolution.

For videos, upload them to YouTube and paste a link here.

For pictures, all you have to do is resize your existing photos down from the enormous size they are from your camera before you try uploading them.  You can do that in any photo editor you have on your computer, including Paint which is installed on all Windows computers (for now).  If you're still stuck, send me a PM and I'll send you my e-mail address, you can send them to my e-mail and I'll get them sized correctly and post them for you.

The Insert Coins lamp works when in test mode(test button on coin mech) with the door open.

That's good info, so we know that lamp works.   :cool_thumb_up:

You're saying this machine is using an MC-40.

...

Well, there you go, that's likely the issue.  I did previously ask if the machine had ever accepted coins with the MC-40 installed, but I don't see a reply to that question.

Yes, this machine has worked perfectly for about 10 years with the MC-40 Coin mech.     I unplugged the machine about a month ago to move it while I remodeled the room, when I moved it back, the symptoms above appeared.    I am out of town this week for work, so I will not be able to try to swap it until later this week
