Author Topic: Quarter won't go through Comparitor (Read 5175 times)

I bought an S+ machine (circa 1993) that has glass and tags for 25 cents. Inside is a coin comparitor model CC-16E (24v).

I put a quarter into the comparitor (the sample coin). I then tried to drop a quarter through the slot on the left side of the comparitor. It wouldn't drop through.

I replaced the sample quarter with a nickel. A nickel in the same slot passed through just fine.

I also noted that someone had written "5 cents" in magic marker on the sheet metal behind where the comparitor was mounted.

I don't want a 5 cent machine. I want a quarter machine. Do I have to replace the comparitor? What other components should I examine to make sure quarters work in the machine?

If the coin head is for nickels then you will need to replace it with a quarter head or use a dremel tool to widen the slot just a bit. I have done this before and it's quite easy

By "coin head" do you mean the slot on the comparitor itself or the piece on the outside of the door marked "insert coin here"?

yea, that's what he was referring too! does the quarter go through the cc-16? or does it get stopped as it tries to enter the coin optic encoder?

if you have a nickel encoder installed it might not allow a quarter to pass??

A quarter sits on the top of the comparitor with about half of the coin visible. I can get it to drop only if I move the sample coin holder with my finger. As I said, nickels drop right through.

you have to replace the nickle with the quarter, put it in the same slot where the nickle was. it is used as a sample coin to compare to and establish the opening to accept that size coin.

I made sure that the sample coin matched the coin I was inserting.

These types of problems are much more easy to solve with photos. Post a few photos showing your machine's coin comparitor and the coin slot on the front of the machine where you insert a coin. Whatever you think the problem area is.

A previous owner may have converted the machine to use nickels, even if the glass and stickers on the machine says "25 cents". If so, the coin hopper may be setup for nickels and you will need to do something about that too. So post a photo of the coin hopper showing the coin wheel, that's the large round metal wheel or plate that rotates and causes the coins to be paid out to the player.

There are spacers / restrictors that likely need to be removed.

I suspect that the nickle had issues validating and there was a restrictor put in place so it falls right down the middle of the comparator.
You might have to unscrew it and remove this part.

Here are a couple of photos per the request. I've put a quarter into the comparitor as far as it will go.

I've also removed a cover plate from the hopper to expose the wheel underneath.

You need to put the sample coin in front.

My photo shows a coin that won't enter the slot. A sample coin (quarter) is already installed in the comparitor in the photo. I noticed that in your photo the sample coin is still visible. On mine is is not. The coil closes completely over the coin.

If it's not in the channel of the slide then it's too far back. When placed properly it should look like the last two photos.

My picture shows a .900 token which is smaller than a quarter.

It does not look like you have the sample coin/token installed properly. The left side of the sample coin or token will always be visible. Remove the sample coin from your coin comparator. Then slide the sliding cover to the right, insert the sample coin into the groove on the left edge of the coin holder, then move the sliding cover to the left as far as possible, into position over a portion of the quarter/token. The sliding cover will bump-up against the right-side edge of the sample coin.

The left edge of the sample coin/token will rest in a groove in the coin holder, the sample coin does not get placed down in the hole. The fact that your sliding cover is all the way to the left means the sample coin is not installed properly. And that's your problem with getting a quarter to insert, with the sliding cover so far to the left it closes off the coin channel at the top of the coin comparitor.

Also, as mentioned earlier, you need to reconnect that wiring harness on the coin comparitor that has the black, white, red, yellow wires.

I think I now have the sample coin in the right place. But it looks like the comparitor is not lined up with the coin slot. When I drop a coin in the slot (on the front of the machine) it falls in front of the comparitor rather than in the comparitor's slot.

The comparitor is held in place by some plastic clips that don't seem to be adjustable.

How do I get the slots lined up?

I agree. But they seemed to be keyed in such a way that they are not movable. Or ARE they?
