Re: Why does my bill validator keep spitting out the bills???

I am soooo frustrated and you guys have always helped me in the past so here it goes. The bill validator in my I Dream of Genie slot used to take only the "old" style of bills. Then all of a sudden it didn't light up anymore and wouldn't work. I saw a youtube video on how to take it out and put it back in so that's what I did and now it lights up and takes the bills. But after it takes the bills it makes the sound like it's doing something but then spits it back out. Please help and I'm not machine saavy lol. Thanks in advance

I realize this is a old thread but i am currently having the same issue and hope to end this thread with a happy ending (fixing my bill validator that keeps spitting my bills out).

I just turned the bvd on as the previous owner installed the game chip in backward (took me 14hrs of research and learning all about the igt also thanx to many of you who post on this site "i did fix it" .


So the real test was putting in bills and finding out what year bills it will except. Wrinkly bills so far no luck, one crisp $1 bill made it through. So it worked ? any thing i can do for wrinkly bills to make its way to the collection box.

I am getting ready to post a video of all the exact details but it also takes a 5 thats not to wrinkly and never makes it past the opticals but you can see and hear it trying as if jammed or ? also when this happens it will not spit the bill back out. It will spit a bill back out when it decides to not even try, guessing thats my cash box but not 100% on that.

First off, when troubleshooting a bill validator problem you want to only use $1 bills that are in good condition until you are sure the bv itself is working ok. That eliminates the possibility that your problem is being caused by the bv internal software being too old and not recognizing some of the newer design bills. If the bill validator works consistently with a $1 bill then you can try other bills to see what it does and does not accept. The version of software in the bv will determine what bills it recognizes. If the bv works fine with a $1 but has trouble with other bills then the problem is usually out of date bv software.

It is best if the machine doesn't have a bunch of playing credits. Otherwise a problem could be that accepting a bill would put the machine over the credit limit, so it rejects the bill.

If the bv won't even accept a $1 bill then you figure out if the bv is bad or if something about the machine is causing the problem. This can be a setting in the Test/Setup menus, like the credit limit being too low. Or the problem can be something like the cash box not seated or the cash box security switch not working.

Also, we will need to know what model of bill validator the machine has. Post a photo of it if you aren't sure. The more information you provide the better the help response you'll get.

For the wrinkled bills I'd just take them to the bank and get fresh ones, that's pretty easy. Or you could try dampening them lightly and then ironing with the iron set to low heat. But why bother with that, just trade them at the bank.

You could try cleaning the optics with a qtip and some glass cleaner too

What is the model of your Dollar Bill Validator (DBV)?  That will begin to give us an idea of what current bills it may be capable of accepting.

As rokgpsman said above, when troubleshooting a DBV, use only good condition $1 bills until you can get the validator to accept those reliably.  If it won't accept $1s routinely, it's not going to accept any bills routinely.

My DVB-200 will accept 1s 20s and 100s.  I had an issue where the validator took the bills and shoved them in, but the belts on the transport were so worn that they wouldn't pull the bills the rest of the way through.  A little bit of fan belt dressing fixed that.  for now anyway

I actually replaced the O rings that "grab" the bill on my old BVD's. The fix worked great but the O ring quality was shitty! So if you do, get the good O rings. It really wasn't hard to do. Of course, the belts can be an issue as well.

It could be the BV's power supply. (black box attached to left side of BV)  Do you have access to any parts to swap?

EDIT- based on you saying your DBV-145 accepted a "newish" $5 bill I am striking what I said here:
The DBV-145 will ONLY accept $1 bills, all other bills have been redesigned and the DBV-145 will not recognize or accept them. There are no upgrades to it that will make it work with any other bill denominations.

If the DBV-145 is working ok it should always accept a $1 bill, make sure it is in decent condition. You have to insert it with the  portrait of Pres Washington up, and the top of his head to the right. The DBV-145 will only accept bills this particular way.

You can replace the DBV-145 with a DBV-200, it is a direct replacement. The replacement DBV-200 will need the same machine type of software, such as ID-022 or -023 for IGT S+ for example. Look on the DBV-145 for a sticker that says "IDxxx" and it probably says ID-022 or -023.

I did not see a ID but did see a software version 2.15 that looks like original sticker. There was a sticker on top of the 2.15 sticker that was ripped off but no clue what it was for or what it said. Pretty sure your right about it being older version though.


When i used to go to casinos back in the day it seemed like the bill validators would take just about any wrinkly bill i had that wasn't torn. Guess i was just lucky enough to have decent enough bills but man is my validator picky even with $1 bills. It took a newish $5 bill at one point so maby i will get some extra crispy bills tomorrow and see what happens.

I have a crispy $50 from 1996 that a 145 will take with no problems.

Well, I meant the bills that are currently being printed for circulation won't work. I suppose if someone has old-style bills from back before they got the last redesign then yes they will work now as they did back then. Maybe the older $50 bills are still available.

I wish that $50 could buy today what it could buy in 1996.

Yes that is what I meant. The older 50's seem to be easiest to find.
The fed reserve has done a wonderful job of devaluing our dollar.

Another thing that happens with these older bill acceptors is that the belt wear out and get hard. Then they won’t want to grab the bill when it’s inserted. This can cause your bill acceptor to reject the bills. You can try cleaning the belts and rollers. If you belts are hard and glazed you could try roughing them up a little. Don’t get to aggressive since they don’t make new belt kits any more.
