ah slotto.  How does the ball selection work?  The balls in the top don't really have anything to do with the ball that shows up does it?

Good Question!..

The previous owner only had Top-Of-The-Line, latest and greatest, minty machines. This machine came from his private collection.

You're correct, the balls in the top are just for show.  There's a round carousel/platter just above the tube where the ball drops down to show you what you won.  All of the possible outcomes are represented by individual balls in that platter.  When the outcome is decided by the machine, the platter rotates to the point where the correct ball is in position, then a mechanism opens to allow the ball to fall out of the platter and down the tube to show the player.  I believe air is used after a few seconds to blow that ball back up into its place in the platter for its next use.
