Fire Hazard?

There's a guy on ebay selling a Lithium Ion battery 3.6 volt to replace the green varta battery on enhanced boards to supposedly fix the "Netplex link down" error on s2000's.  He is basically selling a 3.6 Volt Lithium Ion Battery and a AA battery holder with wires that you solder into the terminals where the varta battery was when removed.  The varta battery is a NiMH battery.  Am I not right in assuming that for Lithium Ion batteries to be safely re-charged you need a circuit to detect over-heating and over charging?  Lithium Ion batteries explode if overheated or overcharged.  The S2000 lacks Lithium Ion charging safety circuits.

Your right that a LiON battery can explode if over charged.
 I can't speak to the specifics of what this dude is selling, but I believe that the AA format of a LiON battery may have internal protection.
The following link talks about various formats and such - the general conclusion is that the unbranded ones likely don't have any protection.

Looks like a raw battery to me.  The AA format I've always seen are used in multi-packs and the protection circuitry is clearly visible in the multi-packs.  I would never install a Lithium Ion battery on any circuit that was not designed to use them, it's just asking for trouble.  In any case, the safer procedure is to just remove the varta and clip transistor at U16.

You are right to be concerned about a fire hazard. A lithium ion battery even in AA format may have internal protection, but why risk it.  I highly recommend using only top branded batteries that contain internal protection and only use in a device intended for lithium ion batteries. This adds another level of protection.


Keep in mind that there is more to be concerned about than just whether a lithium ion battery has protection. If an internal insulating membrane fails it can go exothermic and battery protection circuits can't stop it. This is why quality control during manufacturing is so important. Stick to quality brands !!!

This looks to be the same jerk that Barry Fox’s and maybe a few others had a problem with a year or so back. He bought boot chips and other items, then complained they didn’t work. He then demanded a refund for these items. Next he starts sell these same boot chips. You can tell by his hand written yellow labels. I believe he has more the 1 EBay account that he works from.
