Can standard S5500 replace after market mod?

Customer bought a Cal Dreamin theme S5500 with after market board installed, game did not come up.
They bought a replacement board, a standard S5500, and it came without the 6 software chips.
The reel tape SMI numbers are Reel #1 SMI 7115 - Reel #2 SMI 7326 - Reel #3 SMI 7915 or 7418 (exact number was unreadable).
The S5500 replacement board will plug into the game but without software it reads all 8's on displays.
I can't find a SMI listed that is #7115, or #7326 on my master list.
Are they sort of screwed trying to get the purchased S5500 to work?
If I have them send me the original board can I plug it into my S5500 tester and see if I could fix it or was there other connector mods that would not allow this?
