Igt s+ handle pull shorts the outlet

This is the weirdest damn thing. Picked up a slot with minor coin issues.  I remember playing a few credits and pulled the handle, worked fine.


I get it home, fix the coin issues, and everything is working.  When I go to bet a credit and pull the handle, a split second after I release and the reels spin, it trips the breaker.  I believe it's a 15a outlet.


I have four other slots on this outlet, all others work fine.  I disconnected all others, same trip.  I look for FOD, nothing obvious on the solenoid.  Wtf.


What else could cause it to trip the breaker on the outlet like that? Just from handle pull?  Could I have somthing jumping the solenoid or retuning extra charge to the mpu? I didn't take it apart, that's for tomorrow.  Just curious if anyone had something obvious.  Maybe a coin got stuck back in there and I just can't see it yet.

The switch for the handle and the Spin button are wired in parallel.
There's no large current running through those lines.

Unplug the power plug from the household socket first.
Take off power supply box cover and look inside. (One Philips screw on the left side of the power supply box)
It's possible a coin is lodged in there and when you pulled the handle, it rattled and contacted a couple of soldered power wires?

Also, check the 3 quick-blow fuses from top to bottom...>>>

Surely one of them blew out?

Another possibility is the 115VAC wires (solid black and white w/red stripe) from the bill acceptor unit are caught in the handle solenoid somehow?

All reasonable troubleshooting actions.  I was tired last night and only thought to hit the handle a few times hah.


But come to think of it, one of the two machines had the cover to the PS off, and I placed it back on.  I'm gonna start there tonight.  Seems very plausible, but if the button/handle run parallel, that's strange cause the game fully functions as long as you don't touch the handle.  I will investigate!

The Red Green Solution would use some duck tape to hold the arm in place. Problem solved.

I found goo dripping out of the handle assembly down into the power supply.  I got some cleaning to do. So weird, it looks like caramel.  Is there something in there that could rupture a thick caramel like goo.

There is a rubber seal in there that could be breaking down and becoming goo, but there is nothing there to leak.

I swear there was a post on the old site with this same deal, that pulling the handle would cause a short.

I found a sort of similar post where there was a fuse blowing due to a wire on the handle solenoid touching the cabinet.  I guess it couldn't hurt to (with the machine power off) verify that all of the wires to the handle switch and the handle solenoid are connected well, and not shorting together at all, especially when the handle is pulled.   ...and also make sure that the wires for the solenoid aren't connected to the microswitch for the handle, as those wires carry 24vac and would certainly cause a problem if one lead is accidentally connected to the microswitch and then the switch is closed.

Pull the main power cord completely out of the machine and look for a crushed section and torn insulation.
It could be the cord shorts when you pull the handle due to physical movement of the shorted cord.

Solved/fixed.


After pulling stuff out and sticking my head in there, I saw the AC power line connected from the On/Off switch to the power supply routed BEHIND the pull handle Assembly, the wire was trapped between the assembly and cabinet.  This didn't make any sense, double checked that there shouldn't be any feed back there, and was able to dislodge it after a bit of a struggle. 


The wires were obviously frayed, and I guess when handle was depressed was just perfectly exposed to one of the mechanicis near there to short it?  This explains why it never busted the fuse.  Fixed it up, it works.


Just wonder if it was manufactured this way or if some dingbat messed with the assembly at one point.


Was quite the relief when I found it though.  Thanks all!

I believe you mentioned you had other S+'s are you able to check the cable routing in them ?

Yeah Jay, I double checked the lines on my other s+ before tugging on these. 


And yeah *bunker, someone got sloppy with wire routing! Lazy lazy
