Double Jackpot Haywire not working
« on: August 08, 2019, 04:26:26 pm »
I purchased a non working machine this past weekend. The MPU is eat up with acid damage from the Varta battery, so I purchased a replacement board. It arrived today. I transferred the chips from the original board to the replacement. It has a new button cell battery but nothing where the Varta battery was. When I power on the machine, the top two amber LEDs flash together, the next two amber stay on all the time, the green led is on all the time, the red led flickers really fast. Eventually the red led starts blinking slowly and all the amber LEDs stay lit or just randomly alternate just the top two flashing. Nothing is on the displays. First slot machine for me, but been dealing with pinball machines and video games for years.

Check the power supply behind the reels. It slides to the right and there is a holding screw on the left.
Thank Ya Thank Ya Very Much.

I'm guessing be that chip is bad now. 4271 is the only information on the sticker. I have an eprom burner and can program a new one if I know what eprom to use and could get a good file to burn.

I peeled back the sticker on the 4271 chip and see that it's a 2764 eprom. I have plenty of those available and can program one if needed. I will just need the room file.

First be sure that all chip pins are making contact. It's easy to fold one unknowingly when you install them. All S2000 chips should be 120ns or faster. Your Stepper Game chips are unidentified . A bad or incompatible chip inserted properly should give you an error on the VFD when it boots. You're not even getting to that point. A single pin not making contact can red light the MPU. A bad MPU can red light also.

My eprom programmer can read the 4271 chip so I assume that's it's okay. I saved the ROM imagine so that I could burn another when I get extra time. The acid damage was pretty bad on the other board. I'll go back and check all the legs on the chips. Maybe I overlooked something when I swapped boards.

Okay, I left the machine on and left the room. I heard something making a noise and I ran to see what it was doing. Top two amber LEDs are off. Red led is no longer flickering. Front of machine has a message saying Display's NetPlex link is down. Other than that, nothing.

Try disconnecting the printer and BV and see what happens.  Also could be bad power supply.

Adding to Mark's post. Be sure to power off before disconnecting or reconnecting any components. Most likely scenario is that power supply is bad. You can recap them but they are pretty reasonably priced if you just want to replace it.

I think you have two problems, the only time I have ever seen the RED LED come on is due to a sofware issue or the board is bad!  your power supply may have a heat related problem, first on it will operate, then crap out as time goes by.

only sure way to know is to measure the voltage, the connector, located on the bottom right of the backplane board is the power connector coming from the power supply,  there are three wires that you need to check, the solid red wire is the +13 vdc, the solid orange wire is +25 vdc and the top black wire is the cpu start voltage it is typically 6-9 vdc.  use any cabinet metal for the ground for your meter.

bad electronic ballast have been know to pull down the +25 vdc, these operate the fluorescent bulbs.

Orange and Red wire power was good. Nothing on the black wire. I'll order a new power supply and get back with you all.

Power supply outputs 13v and 25v, which tested good. Where is the 6-9 v coming from?

the top wire of that connector has the cpu start voltage,  can't remember if it the left wire or the right wire, measure both,  the voltage comes from pin 7 of the power supply.

I have tested power supplies for sale if you need one, plus probably any part for a s-2000  or S+ machine.
