first time with a fortune 1

turns on . says no credits , insert coin.  coin switch tests good, doesnt coin up. coin lock out doesnt energize.  battery was changed. no error messages, doesnt say door open when opened. cabinet looks like it had a handle. jackpot switch has a top and bottom switch. bottom switch bad, jumping it did nothing. i know nothing about these. is there a reset procedure? a chip?  chips on board say 1986 and 1988.  any and all advice welcome. pics to follow, it choked when i tried to load, even though i shrunk them.  plate says model 611, 1981.

Ouch...1981...It's now 2021...I was 21 years old when that came out. I feel old! lol
1st of all, I'd try reading everything you can in the Fortune 1 topics here on NLG....you are NOT the first one to have this problem I am sure.

Especially about power supplies...you are going to have to know how to use a multi-meter and start reading all the different voltages coming out of the PS area. and write EVERYTHING down on a sheet.
You need to be meticulous about everything to even try to get this entire cabinet back in tip-top shape.

Can you imagine the oxidization of male/female connector pins with a 40 year old machine?
Start pulling apart and do extensive cleaning on every pin connector you can find with De-Oxit...ONE at a time.
Who knows how long this machine was neglected?

I have this one working. I will be honest, I'm swapped with stuff. I can try to be of some help. Didn't have to do much to get it going and I think it's working pretty good. Some lamps are out but functional to compare with if needed.

EDIT - Board looks OK - except that resistor looks 'heat damaged' probably still reading OK, I've seen them look worse and still read the correct ohms. I will try to locate it on the print if I have it when I get home tonight (time and back permitting LOL) and see what it would be a load resistor for.

There was no clear chip. The chips are very old tri voltage EPROMs. If you don't have a credit game then you do not need a battery.
Might I suggest you send your board to my shop so I can put it on my Fortune 1 board tester and get it going for you?

Best I can tell from the Fortune I info in the download section -

That resistor is a 47 ohm 1 W for the VDO labeled voltage.

Use a 3 Watt Metal Film resistor and don't let the body of the resistor lay on the PC board.

Badbaud is correct.  Send him the board and have it checked and corrected.  Now you have a known good baseline.  I have 5 working Fortune 1 games and Alan has tuned them all up.  God bless him.
