S+ Dip switch #3 effects reel operation.
« on: June 30, 2021, 08:11:59 pm »
I'm having a problem with a Double Diamond (S plus) machine. I've done a search for my issue as well as posted the problem on the board, but unfortunately no solution☹. I apparently will need a professional to take a look. I'm looking for someone in Orange County California (preferably North OC) who works on Slot machines any recommendations?
Thank you.

What exactly is the problem. Any error codes showing?

The machine had been functioning correctly now when I turn on the machine the reels don't initiate and none of the buttons light up. There is no error code present. If I push the white menu button it won't go thru the menu it will only light up Spin Reel and bet one credit buttons. If I push the spin reel button I can hear a click but the reels don't spin, it will also allow me to pull the handle but that won't spin the reels either.

There is no error code, the reels are firm when turned on, all connections have been checked and re-seated, the white menu button or jackpot reset key won't do anything except light the spin reel and bet one credit buttons, the molex cable to the power supply has been replaced (although it didn't appear defective or burnt).

Did you check the power supply fuses and fuse caps/holders?

Thank you sixcardmark,  I forgot to mention in my original post, I did check the power supply fuses, fuse caps and holders.
shortrackskater as I mentioned in the previous post the power supply cable was replaced even though it appeared fine and the reels are NOT free wheeling.

okay...I'm up in the Northeast USA...I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure I can help ya get your machine running the way it's supposed to?

You said the reels are stiff at power up...that's good.

"... If I push the white menu button it won't go thru the menu ..."

This ^^^ means ^^^ nothing is changing on the display panel in any of the LED openings right?

Are there any numbers at all?     I mean...even a "zero"?

If so, which box on the display panel?

I'm wondering if you have the long reel glass display panel or the smaller one that is mounted up on the right?

Also, is the .25 cent denomination light on?

Could you make me a short 30 second video of the machine powered up while watching what happens on the reel glass display?

If not, turn the reels a few symbols off by hand and see if they turn back to where they were before you moved them?

This will test the MPU to see if it has memory skills and can correct itself.

I found the culprit (kind of).

All of the explained symptoms only happen when the number 3 dip switch is ON.
If the switch is OFF the machine functions correctly with ONE strange exeption..... the sound does the opposite of what it should do. It only plays the reels spin sound and not the reel stop sound :Scratch-Head:.
When I do a sound test 50-56 all function except 55 (I don't know what 55 sound is for) I just hear a slight mechanical click, but no sound thru the speaker.
I'm not sure if this matters I have never heard the machine play a song on a win just the typical ding sounds (Double Diamond  Deluxe 0731 chip).  However, the songs played when I did the Song tests 60-67 Is this something I need to set-up
Stayouttadabunker
White button does nothing (works correctly when 3 is off)
No LED displayed not even 0
25 cent denomination light is ON regardless of switch position.

on/off directions of the switches (see photo)

Check that the reel stop solenoid is actually working properly.  That is probably the sound test slight click you hear.  Is the pull handle working right?

Yes, the pull handle is working correctly as well as the spin reel button.
I'm not at the machine so I can't check the stop solenoid.

As in your photo, I always have the 1-4 Dips ON....5-8 OFF.

Dip 3 controls the reel spin and reel stop sounds...I like both of them ON....it's a personal preference really.

You are sying that you have problems when the #3 Dip is ON.

I'd be checking operation of the handle solenoid when you get a chance.

Make sure nothing is shorting out....that can cause problems.

I find it strange that having the #3 Dip in the ON position affects the game operation other than sounds? It shouldn't..

Since switch 3 is related to the reels it obviously effects them and it appears to me it's somehow related to the stop function. I find it strange too, and I also agree it shouldn't effect the game operation but it obviously does as it will do it 100% of the time with the switch ON and 0% when the switch is OFF with no other changes. I prefer both sounds on as well however, if I can't figure out the problem at least I can use the machine with the stop sound off.  Whatever the problem is doesn't appear to effect anything else.
Since I've narrowed it down to the switch I'm going to start a new thread.

S+ Dip switch #3 effects reel operation.
« Reply #15 on: July 07, 2021, 10:17:06 am »
I have a Double Diamond Deluxe (0731 chip) S plus machine that works correctly unless I attempt to enable the stop sounds by turning on dip switch #3. When this switch is off everything functions normally. With the switch in the ON position the machine will not function and instead I get the following symptoms:
When I turn on the machine the reels don't initially spin and none of the buttons light up. There is NO error code present in fact there are no LEDs displayed at all. If I push the white menu button it won't go thru the menu it will only light up Spin Reel and bet one credit buttons. If I push the spin reel button I can hear a slight click but the reels don't spin, it will also allow me to pull the handle but that won't spin the reels either.
I dont know if this is related or not, when I do a sound test 50-56 all function except 55 (I don't know what 55 sound is for) I just hear a slight mechanical click, but no sound thru the speaker.
I know the #3 switch is related to the reels and it appears the problem is related to the stop portion of the reels. What stop related part (that appears to be related to sound not function (since all is OK when sound is off)) would cause the above symptoms?

Oh oh. Looks like a new post from another thread. I get why you decided to do a new post/thread. Ok to do that but you might get some replies that redo some of the earlier stuff.

Let us see what we can figure out.

You say the machine does not function with dip switch #3 ON.
Dip switch #3 is supposed to control the sound. OFF - reel stop sound only. ON - spin and reel stop sound.  ( Does not actually have anything to do with the reel operation, just sound )
So with it off, you should hear a sound when the reels stop. On you should hear spinning sound when reels spin and a sound when the reels stop.

You say the machines works ok when the switch is off. But does not initialize when it is on. Agreed, that is strange. You try to do a sound test- I believe when the machine is in this non working state - if so, I would assume the test may not work correctly. Try the sound test with the switch off and the machine working and see what you get.  I may be wrong here when you did the test, so you can clarify if needed.

I can't think of much that would cause the machine to not work with the switch on. The dip switch just switches in a ground and the MPU reads the switch setting (on/off ground/5V) at power up. It does not read them again until power is cycled.
Maybe there is a problem with the mpu and motherboard connectors that is causing the problem and it looks like switch 3 on is the trigger. Seems a bit unlikely as I will assume you have removed the mpu board many times to switch the #3 dip switch.

PM me if you like and we can talk on the phone.
Tony

There is a menu setup for sound depending on the software in use. I don't know exactly how that affects the sound, but others can respond about that if needed.

I started a new post because I found the cause and it was getting lenthy and confusing to attempt to find the cause. Now that I know the cause I thought it would make more sense to start a new post with the cause as the title. If this is not the proper protocol I apologize.
I mentioned:
"With the switch in the ON position the machine will not function and instead I get the following symptoms:
When I turn on the machine the reels don't initially spin"
and
"If I push the white menu button it won't go thru the menu"
With the switch OFF it acts normal which means the reels spin when I turn the machine on and I have access to the menu, which is how I did the sound test.
I also understand "Dip switch #3 is supposed to control the sound. OFF - reel stop sound only. ON - spin and reel stop sound." And isn't SUPPOSE to  effect the operation of the reels. The fact is, (at least on my machine) it IS effecting the reels.
With the switch ON I get this failure 100% of the time.
With the switch OFF (and no other changes) the machine behaves normal 100% of the time.
I understand what it is SUPPOSE to do. I'm just saying what my machine is actually doing.

Yes sounds good on the new title and post. No problem.

Thanks for the explanation. And clarification on the test, menu work you have done. I over thought that part. Makes perfect sense now.

I like these strange unexplainable problems. I can not think of any reason that dip switch would do that. Obviously it is and there will be an explanation once the fault is determined.

Here is what I would suggest/do.

I believe you have other mpu boards from the earlier threads.
Do all the other boards have the same problem with switch 3?
If not then only this one board?
Can you post pictures of the entire board, front and back?
If you have other boards, do they work properly with switch 3 in either state?
I know this sounds a bit elementary but I am trying to determine, as I suspect, the problem is just the one board. Not the machine?
Would you be interested in sending the board to me to troubleshoot? I would like to see what is causing the problem so just shipping.

You should have my number from an earlier PM if you would consider talking 1st. Maybe easier than posts.
I enjoy troubleshooting strange problems like this.

Thank you Tony.
Actually its my sisters game and the only mpu available. I too figured since its such an odd problem that it's probably board related. The only other clue was sound #55 not functioning. Do you know if this is the reel stop sound. I dont remember, and the game isn't available to me right now. If it is, what triggers the sound from the test since I could hear a slight mechanical click (not the speaker).
I asked my sister about sending the board and she said if the only issue is no reel stop sound she's fine with the machine the way it is. I'm still going to look for another mpu. If I find one I'll send you the board to play with😀  Now I just got to get the old DBV 45-SS working. I know I should just swap it out for a DBV 200 but I've got the 45 and she just wants to use coins anyway. I figured I could set ithe denomination as 5 cents and she can add 20 credits at a time with dollar bills and use it as a piggy bank.
