Bally S5500 (I think?) Not Accepting Quarters Properly

Brand spanking new here.

My father purchased a slot machine and I would love to try and help him out by fixing this problem. Me and him are both pretty handy, however we know very little about slot machines.

Recently purchased. The guy we bought it from said tokens had been working, but quarters not.

We have a quarter sitting in the coin comparator. We have also turned the coin comparator +/- dial both left and right. It currently sits all the way to the left.

I’ve read some old forums about reset switches, hidden buttons and other things but I haven’t really relayed it into effect.

Hoping to get some troubleshooting advice. Willing to send a couple dollars cash to someone who ends up helping via cashapp or Venmo. I’m attaching photos to show model and what everything looks like.

* the red light on the coin comparator does not seem to light up. Is that correct?
*the yellow light below the coin comparator does light up. Is that correct?

Please try and use simplistic language when replying as a lot of things may not make sense

Flip the coin mech toggle switch to the up position. (4th pic)

Just did that and tried again with no success.

I will keep it in the up position for the time being

You may need to reboot the machine.

Sounds simple, do you have a little bit of detail how this is done?

Just turn machine off and back on again.  You can also try putting a different quarter in the comparitor.

I’ve tried both of these. We’ve tried a few different quarters in the comparator.

Unplugged from the wall.
Took the coin comparator out and unplugged all three of those wires then plugged back in.
Hit the small reset button next to the coin mech button and the power switch a few times.

On the cabinet is a White plunger switch for the door. Pull the plunger outward. Machine will think the door is closed. See if the Red LED on the comparitor lights up? The pot is turned fully CCW ?  The comparitor may be faulty. The capacitors go bad on the internal board inside the comparitor. Either buy a replacement comparitor or  replace the capacitor on the circuit board.  Yes it is a 5500 model Bally

After reviewing your pictures I see the MPU, the tray with the coin mech micro toggle switch,  is not square into the slot. Turn power off and pull the tray out. Look inside, you will see a plastic guide on each side,  the metal tray,  that the MPU is mounted to,  that you just pulled out  , that tray goes into those plastic guides. Reinsert it. Push all the way in. When it gets to the back, and connects it will be hard friction fit, push firmly , you should feel it pop into place. Now turn the power on, close the door and see if you have numbers displayed in the Red LED's in the credit display or others. Your picture shows nothing. If the displays show nothing you may need a power supply. Your comparitor maybe OK.

Thank you for that. You are right it was in improperly. Unfortunately it didn’t fix the coin problem however. Here is two photos of the front of the machine after I fixed the box…

The photo with the 2 is what it showed with the coin mech button flipped upwards. The other display is what it showed with the coin mech switch flipped down.

The coin mech switch has to be up for the machine to accept coins and/or bills. Take the MPU out and look at the electrical connector on the edge of the board and see if there is any bent pins.

I appreciate the replies I’ve gotten so far.

I took out the MPU placed it into its proper seating, pushed to click it on, and now I do have lights I didn’t have before.

The bet max, spin, jackpot, insert coin, coin accepted, bet one, cash credit, and change light are all flashing now. Also the win paid shows an 81 instead of random numbers

We purchased a new coin comparator that was tested guaranteed working. Still not accepting the coins properly.

Not sure if I have any other options

You will need to replace the battery on the MPU (81 error) and then do a clear procedure.

Well sunrise.

We’ve made it this far. I really enjoy breaking things down in an attempt to fix things. Never thought in my life I’d be working on an old slot machine.

I have the 83 f code now which I’m guessing is a good sign and the battery was a problem before, no longer.

Do I now have to look for RAM clear chips? Or is there a way to do it without the chips?

It seems like people are genuinely just helpful on this forum, however, time isn’t free. Again, I’m willing to share with you some $$$ if you share your cashapp / Venmo.

The S5500 only needs to be cleared with the SRAM CLR jumper.
Hold down the test and pseudo coin buttons and turn the game on and wait for a CHC then CLC.
