Enabling WBA11
« on: November 27, 2021, 03:18:12 pm »
Hello-
I’m trying to enable a WBA11 DBV on my Double Diamond machine and am stumped.

When I power on the machine, the DBV does nothing; no cycling, nothing happens mechanically. Also, the bezel lights never come on. The machine plays fine with the quarter mech, but I’d like to get the DBV working.

I have a set chip and attempted to use it. Put it in the game socket, set the 9 parameter to 1, and set the denomination to 25. I pushed the test button again to (I assume) save those setting.

I put the game chip back in and went into the test menu and setting 9 flashes between 9 and 0 for coins played, and 0  0 in winner paid. I assume that means the set chip somehow didn’t work?

I see some reference to jumper E15/E16 in documentation around the set chip, maybe I’m missing something there? Mine is set to E15 and I didn’t move it through any of the process. I assume it’s to configure the EEPROM size, but it’s a complete guess.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

The bill validator should always make noise on power-up, even if it's not enabled in the S+ machine. As such, your issue at the moment is that your bill validator does not seem to be getting power. No amount of fiddling with the SET chip will fix that -- you'll need to first determine why it's not doing anything when power is applied.

Thanks, I assumed as much since I don’t see any LEDs on inside the DBV.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram so I can check voltages?

The existing power supply is a psa4012igt. I can’t seem to find one online, or a schematic. Anyone have a source for one?

If I can’t find an original, is there a suitable replacement? I’m not afraid of wiring mods if needed. I’m handy with a soldering iron and heat shrink tubing…..

I think this will help. Not the same power supply part number and for the PE+ but the S + bv power supply is close. PM me if you need more or better info. I have some of the small 12V supplies. I put together the communication pcb but haven't had a chance to test it yet.

You can fix almost any electronic device by replacing the aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

In the S+ and PE+ the bill validator has their own power supply.
I believe what Trisail posted was a picture of the main power supply.

Most of the vendors on our home page can help you out with a replacement.

Bill Validators started out with DBV145, then DBV200, then WBA11,12,13,23
DBV=Dollar Bill Validator, WBA = World Bill Acceptor

The 145 power supply and the 200 were pretty much identical to look at other than the 200 had venting holes, and had identical power connectors. Unfortunately the 145 power supply didn't have enough amps to power the 200..properlly. When powered up it would grind and groan, but not accept bills reliably. We see this problem here occasionally.

I don't have any of my machines with a WBA so I can't comment on the specifics of the power supply other than I know it needs a separate power supply from the main. As such there is AC in to the power block and DC out. Potentially your not getting AC in or DC out .... so I would locate the power block and ensure its getting power and then make sure its plugged into the validator. I have seen machine vendors unplug the heads when they take them out to clean / calibrate them (prior to sale) then when they put them back in they forget to plug them back in. Might be a simple fix that doesn't require you to buy anything.

If you can't afford to lose you can't afford to win.

Attached is a pic of the PS for the WBA in my S+.  It is attached to the side of the cash housing for the WBA, transport and cash can.  One cable goes to a connector on the back of the cabinet and the other connects to one of two connectors that plugs into the WBA itself (that is visible through the hole just in front of the PS).

Edit:  Ok, looks like you have the right one.  Is it connected as described?

Thanks for the picture.  The small 12VDC power supplies will work for the WBA's. PM if you need anything or questions.

The plot thickens.

I made the assumption that my power supply was dead. I put a meter on the output of the supply and it’s at 12.53VDC. Huh.

Everything seems to be hooked up correctly. There are three plugs from the supply, two go to the DBV and the other (square molex type) I assume is the AC supply and comm back to the CPU.

Should I see any LEDs on the WBA11 when power is applied? Maybe the WBA unit is dead?

Thanks in advance!

I should have added. I tested the voltage with the power supply connected to the DBV, so in theory under load….

So if you got power to the ..... then Its something to do with either a bad transport or head.
Have you removed the head and power cycled it. Just to see if there are any grunt and groans at startup.
Then putting the head back in and reseating it.

You might also try opening it and seeing if you have power on the inside - I am always suspect of connections and anything with pins in general.
The manual might help be able to trouble shoot some of the connection issues.

For the life of me I can’t figure out how to remove the head. It must be more difficult than anticipated. I can push the tabs and rotate it back. Not sure how to remove it though.

Anyone have a WBA11 head and transport for sale? I may just rather buy a working one than mess with this one.

I’ve been working on pinball machines for 20 years. They seem like they are easier to fix, but it might just be experience….

If you're going to replace it get a WBA-13-SS with the latest ID022/23 firmware.  You'll need to replace the plug and harness on the rear of the validator housing too, but with the WBA-13 you'll be able to use all of the current currency except for the newest $100.

If you just want to remove the head from the transport there's a metal rod that extends horizontally below the duck bill.  Press that down and pull the head from the transport.

I successfully removed the head, thanks. Still no dice. I can measure 12vdc at CN1 on the transport, so at this point…seems like the transport is dead. I re-seated the eeprom on the transport just for fun, still no dice.

I’d rather take the path of least resistance and just replace the WBA11 transport. Not worried about it not accepting newer bills, I kept an old $100 just for the machine….

Yet, I can’t seem to find a WBA11 transport.

Just to follow up on my own post. I ended up buying a transport/head from Jim at Midwest Slots and I’m running again. Good stuff!

Thanks. To add a little more color to my situation, just to hopefully help someone down the road.

I was dealing with a WBA11. I suspected the power supply was dead, but I checked CN1 where it plugs into the WBA11 and was getting 12VDC. Also noteworthy is that despite having 12VDC at the WBA11 unit, the (2) LEDs on the WBA11 were not illuminating. So I suspect/assume those LEDs are controlled by the unit itself.

Also, I verified the DIP switch settings on the WBA11, tried it with/without the head attached. I also used a SET15 chip to make sure the validator was enabled.

My main symptom was obviously that the validator didn't work. But on power up, the validator did NOTHING. No mechanical movements at all.

Switching to the new WBA13 (I think that's what it is, based on stickers) was relatively simple. I had to switch out the harness, but again, it's not a huge job.

I also upgraded to this power supply, and while it may not have been needed....why not. That was a bit more in depth but still fairly easy if you're accustomed to working on electronics.
