Author Topic: S+ machine keeps blowing fuse after machine was moved (Read 6441 times)

Was working great for a while, Now middle fuse blows (8A)
1. Doesn't blow when 6 pin is disconnected, but fuse goes immediately with plug in.
2. plug appears clean
3. Wheels spin freely and just budge when fuse blows upon power.
4. 18v green, 15v orange - is this supposed to be AC? I am not the best with a meter.
5. Florescent lites work (repaired top one shortly before it went down)
6. 75505700 mpu

Possible causes:
1. was transported on it's back
2. 30 tokens floating around before I cleaned them out

3. I was poking around the buttons inside the door to determine what I needed to replace.

Any help appreciated

You need to pull the top off the power supply and check for coins that may have entered there
Be sure to unplug the machine because there is 110volt inside.

Thanks, already cleaned it out before posting symptoms. It is possible that some tokens did short something out. I need to narrow down why there is no blown fuse when the 6 pin is disconnected and it pops when it is in.

Think you need to remove the back plane board. I bet a coin is under it. Thus blowing the fuse while power is applied to it

Before you put in a new 8A fuse, could you disconnect that top fluorescent lighting you worked on as well?

I want to rule out that's not what's blowing the fuse.

You may have to completely take out the backplane to expose the bottom of it to check if any traces are shorted out.

Like the guys are saying, a coin could have done some damage during the move.

Is there a gray colored foam backed plastic under your backplane?

two things to check:
1. remove the board and see if it blows the fuse with the connector hooked up

2. check for a coin lodged between the back of the metal cabinet and the two connectors of the handle solenoid.

Thanks to all of you, I will do a little disassembly and look for a short as soon as the cold spell moves through. Please keep up with me in a few days. Consensus is another hidden coin shorting out?

Yes, because you stated that the machine "was transported on it's back."
That would make loose coin ("30 coins floating around") go in places they're not supposed to be....haha

how do you remove the back plane board? I took out the 4 or 5 screws and removed the plastic cover. There are a few "rivets" that aren't letting loose easily. I don't want to crack the board, advice on getting the board free please. BTW, this does have grey foam under the board. While I am at it, how do i get the main power supply separated to inspect from the back side?

Those "rivets" that are holding the board down are called "expansion posts".

You should only have 3 screws to remove first before trying to pop the board off of the posts.

I use a long, bent screwdriver to get underneath the board and twist it upwards pushing the board off of the expansion posts.

The hard one to pop off is that one in the back right corner....pop off the left front first.

Then to get the back right one off, you will be able to grab the entire left side of the backplane board with your left hand to help lift it off of that stubborn post.

I've never cracked one...I just work at wiggling it off of the posts.

To inspect the white Molex connector for the main power harness, just lift up and off the male pins and turn around.

Plane board looks ok, no burns or cracks, main molex also looks good. Do you think the pins on the male look dirty? How do I remove main power board to inspect - I am not sure that there aren't any tokens under or behind. THX.

The Molex connector from the power supply to the backplane looks brand new....we can rule that as "good".

The male pins on the backplane power connection could be better, but they look okay.

Check the three fuses...especially the bottom 6amp quick-blow fuse on the power supply.

If you really want to, remove the top glass and place aside.

If you're strong enough, carefully turn the machine upside down onto a towel on the floor and shake the hell out of it.

I'm pretty sure if there's any loose coins still in there, they will fall out.

Your power supply is basically the older model made for the the first line of S+'s to come out.

Your machine also has the smaller deck buttons.

There's a big-assed heavy transformer back down there that has a bunch of wires coming off of the copper coil windings back to the fuses.

Those power supplies last forever...just dig around (make sure your power plug is OUT of the wall socket)...I'm sure you can find if there's any more loose coin.

Just take your time ...this is a hobby....not a life and death situation.

Clean your machine out too....it looks like crap....too much loose metal in there.

When you're ready to turn the power back on, make sure the power plug is pushed in all the way... at BOTH ends.

No luck yet, still blowing fuses.

Time for a "reset"
Removed and inspected back plane board
Removed all loose tokens
White Molex (male & female) look good
With main board removed, still blows fuse
Top florescent light works (didn't try with it disconnected - ran out of fuses)

Other area i messed with was 5 buttons as they are either non lit, or some don't seem to work.
How do I check proper voltage coming out of transformer to main board?

No, I didn't turn it upside down, I am 70 and don't want to risk screwing up my golf game.

Top, middle or bottom?

Middle (8a)). Blows upon powering up with or without main board in. reels just bump as fuse blows when powering up. Florescent lights work, but not game buttons or winner paid display. How do I check the 6 pin white molex for voltage?

Can you take a high resolution photo of the backplane board of the area near the connector?
I want to be able to zoom in on the circuit traces on top of the circuit board to clearly see and inspect them.
Re-size at least one side of your photo to 1000pixel size and it will fit onto the post.
I re-size photos by using the free "paint" program on Windows.
If you upload too small of a photo, we cannot clearly see any possible damage....blowing up the photo only gets more pixelated and blurred.
Look at the size of the diagram I posted below.
You will see one side of the photo is at least 1000pixels...it doesn't matter how large the other side is.
Many members use a program called "TinyPic" ...I don't know how to use it though....lol

I've attached here an excellent diagram an NLG member made of the motherboard/backplane pinouts.
You must set your multimeter to VAC when reading.
The only problem is, how can you read anything if the fuse blows when you turn on the power switch??
You need to find the physical short first.

Unplug that machine and rip apart the power supply and look for a short....sometimes you can find the short by smell.
Something is burned out somewhere in your machine.
Once I had burned out circuit traces on top of the backplane board near the white Molex connector.

I will try to look at some wiring schematics on the lines of the middle 8amp fuse.
I don't remember offhand what the middle 8A fuse controls and protects, as I'm not near a machine today.
Hopefully another member can chime in with some ideas.
