The serial chip on the backplane can also cause 61-1 to loop back to 61. Do you have acess to another machine to check your board in?

Yes.  Swapped 2 known working boards, both worked fine with existing backplane.

Also, 61 error follows board to working machines.

Sounds like you're in the "[61] Loop".
Open the door, turn OFF the power switch & pull out the MPU.
Remove the SP prom, replace with a Clear chip and put back in MPU.
Turn on power switch & run MPU with a Clear chip.
Turn OFF the power switch, pull out the MPU & remove the Clear chip, and re-install SP prom.
Re-install the MPU and turn ON the power switch but leave door open.
You should get a [61] on the reel glass display, hold in test button button for 3 seconds, should go to [61-1].
Close the door, and turn reset key once.
Should be good to go.

I tried to clear a few times.  Initially shows a 01, then after turning off and on again, it stuck on 61.

When I hit the test button, it does nothing.

Looks like acid messed up the traces.

I've seen worse acid damage and the MPU still worked.

okay you're seeing "01" or [61] looking at the [Credits] part of the display.
Watching the display, does it ever go to [61-1] at all when holding in the test button?
You must hold it in a for a few seconds...not just "hit it".

Does the [Coins Played] part of the display panel change when you open or close the door?
Does it momentarily go out?

Also, I'm surprised that you're seeing an "01" even after using a Clear chip.
You should NOT have any credits on it after clearing the CMOS.

Maybe your MPU is screwed.
I'm going to run a clear on one of my MPU's and see if I can get an '01' to pop up.

I ran a Clear chip 3 times.
I can't get your "01" to pop up anywhere on my display, unless I turn the jackpot reset key and go into the machine's internal accounting system.
All I get is the normal "zero" in the [Coins Played] display on the far right.

Thanks again for the suggestions.  I went through a stack of my old suspect boards.  One is immaculate, but no display, sounds, nothing when set up.
