PCP Air Rifles
« on: June 06, 2022, 10:02:29 pm »
I recently started a new hobby of PCP (Pre-Charged Pneumatic) air rifles.  My rifle is a .45 caliber 'Western Big Bore Bushbuck'.   It can send a 475 grain bullet downrange with over 600 ft/lbs of energy. That's more power than a .45 ACP. To charge the rifle requires 4,500 psi of compressed air. I start with a scuba tank which gets me most of the way there, then finish it off to 4500 with a booster pump. One fill gets you 2 shots.

This gun sounds like a cannon going off, so to prevent disturbing my neighbors I added a silencer (suppressor). The silencer, actually two of them connected together, adds 17-inches to the barrel length. Kind of ridiculous but ok for bench shooting from my back yard and the neighbors can't hear a thing. Luckily my house borders empty fields with no neighbors on one side for a mile.

Check out this YouTube video.

Amazing what the have done with these systems. I shoot a gauntlet .25 cal with 2150psi to the chamber. I have an old sprinber I keep at the house for varmints. The gauntlet stays  down at my shop. Squirrel population is 0 .

Thanks to member P-Bar, I just noticed this post of yours Gary, from over three years ago. Very interesting and thanks! Wish I had noticed it then. I was too busy trolling the site for spam.  :Tongue_Out:

P-Bar,

My squirrel population is also down to zero, thanks to my .30 cal FX Impact M3 air rifle and the local red tail hawks. Last year the squirrels stole almost every orange off my tree as well as half my avocados. This year they are under control. The coyotes clean up the squirrels I shoot and the hawks eventually catch the ones I miss.

daily,
I have Mac trees on the property and the squirrels love going up them to get the nuts. Coyotes have been a problem they chew up my poly irrigation lines for the water. They have adapted . I'm semi rural 2 acre plus parcels. North San Diego County Ca. Have family fruit trees along with avo trees.
