Bally Game Maker not starting Gold Mine
« on: July 02, 2024, 02:17:51 pm »
Picked up this machine for $100 on Marketplace.  It was exactly what the owner said. Lights up, that's it. Was left in a rental property they had. According to the digital readout, it's from Resorts hotel and casino.  .not that that matters. Putting the power on, the lights come on, the bill validator cycles completely,  .and that's it.
All the lights on the board are lit green, so it's got power. I pushed the hopper test button, and that worked. I replaced the dead battery on the board with a new one and tested. I read a few posts, but all point to a power supply issue.  I don't think that's the case here, but I don't know older Ballys.

Is this considered a 5500? What else should I be checking?

Thanks as always!

Any chance the game is playing blind and the problem is the monitor?  I assume that is a Tatung monitor and those are known to completely black out when they fail.
If you replaced the dead battery it is probably sitting at a blue screen telling you to run the set chip.
It also doesn't look like there is a coin in the comparitor. That won't stop it from booting but it will be necessary to use coins.

I have a few slot machines, and I'm familiar with the coin in the cc. There was a Japanese token in it. I took it out. If and when I get it going, I'll throw a quarter in it. I was more concerned in actually getting to a screen I can see.

The battery has been replaced, but that's as far as I got. I haven't pulled the monitor  out. Not even sure how it comes out. I tried a couple of pulls at it, but it's in there. Are replacement monitors hard to come by?

I should have been more specific.  If I keep it, I'd either have the crt fixed or replaced with another. .but thank you for the link

Depending which brand CRT, there is cap kits available. But cap kits rarely fix a CRT due to the fact of other failed components, and many times I found the components are obsolete.

There is one screw that goes in from the bottom of the frame (above the hopper). Once that screw is removed you just grab the frame on the sides and it will slide out toward you.
It is usually a Tatung 14428 or 14440 or that family.
You can order a critical cap kit, there are dozens of caps that don’t have to be replaced.
Sometimes the HOT goes out. Everything mentioned is easy to do, it just takes a bit of time getting the chassis out of the frame because of all the touch screen interface.

As suggested, you can order a replacement LCD monitor for about as much as the machine is worth. Depends on whether you want to get your money out of the machine or keep it for life. These are fun machines and well worth investing in but if you plan on selling it you probably won’t find a buyer willing to pay $560 more because it has an LCD monitor.

If that is a V7000, you can install a flat panel touchscreen by using a ELOTOUCH POS monitor which are around $100 on Ebay.

Sunrise Side is exactly right.
Thankfully the Tatungs are usually pretty straightforward.
Caps, one bi-polar cap, maybe the HOT….all available.
If the flyback is out they are not available new but I have a box of chassis’ for parts. I have worked on a few of these and never had to replace a flyback, probably because the HOTs go out first.

Keep us posted, its always good to see a Gamemaker come to life.

Sunrise-Side, thats a good pricepoint. Will the 15” LCD work in a machine that has a 14” CRT?
My CRT barely clears the space between the BV and the left sidewall.

I need to keep your link saved for future reference! I prefer CRT whenever possible but sometimes it isn’t possible.

I had to mount it to the door. Also had to remove a bit of the plastic frame that comes with the LCD. But it's a nice fit. Might be able to mount just the LCD to the original Bally CRT frame?? I have another GM that needs a monitor that I will try using the original CRT frame mount
