Widescreen games on a 18" 4:3 ratio BB1 LCD (with NXT2 CPU)

If you boot into a Widescreen game on the 4:3 ratio 18" screen, the game will look like this:

Less fun because a portion of the image is cut off. 

What I discovered, when testing a 22" LCD plugged in at boot up and then moving the video cable back to the 18" screen, the image is complete, and the game is playable.

I am wondering if some sort of EDID connected inline dictating 1680x1050 resolution on boot up, would allow the 18" LCD to easily play widescreen games.  (The EDID would have to be removed after boot)
