Ram clear chip

So I wanted to make a copy of my wms bb2 ram clear sclr-000-1851 and safely store original so I got a new blank 512 cf and I used  winimage on win11 and took an image and wrote to new one. Now both the ram clear chips give me prepart dss violation.  Ugh. From reading it seems windows may corrupt them automatically on connection to a computer!   Ugh one more lesson learned.  If so is there a way to get the file to rewrite it from maybe a Mac or Linux desktop instead to fix or is fork out  more $$$ for new chip only route?

To fix the CF when you have read the CF under windows 7 or earlier and if it is no longer valid use a hex editor to change the bytes at 0x1B8, 0x1B9, 0x1BA, 0x1BB to "00".

Ok. I have the card open in Linux.  I assume the first volume called 4.1 and the file I need is mbr.b?

They already have 0’s on that file.

I confirm that those positions are all 00

Idk just don’t let these CF cards touch a windows machine or they are gone!  I can’t find any backup files to just extract out the problem file or backup the card itself. I’m thinking lost cause here. I messed up using windows on it. Get another card and use Linux to backup onto my messed up one?  Not too keen on spending yet more money.

Win7 and earlier can be used and won't mess up the card.

Any newer version of Windows and it will muck the card the moment you plug it in. 

So if you have any machine that's Win7 or earlier, even XP.   You might be able to verify those values.  But not on a Windows version 8 or newer

I’m looking in Linux now not windows. The values seem correct but cards still crud.  I’m thinking I’m looking at the right files. Theres 4 partitions. Idk. Nothing is clear on the exact file to look at and exactly how to fix it unfortunately. 

I’d never would guessed a disk could be fully damaged just plugging into windows like that but I’m not seeing a fix. These cf cards are old and I’d just like backups. I’d rather not just trust a 20 year old cf card is going to last.
