Bucks Ahoy Top Box Blank
« on: July 31, 2024, 02:24:22 pm »
I'm stuck on the top box any help appreciated. What I've done so far:
-replaced bad cap on top board, just the one noticeable.
-bottom will start, WAITING ON VIDEO DISPLY, then times out, then MSVERIFY: COMM ERROR
-when I unplug the gray wire harness from top display, WAITING ON VIDEO DISPLY, then times out, then MSVERIFY: COMM ERROR, then Display passes self test
-tried VGA monitor and it receives no signal
-tried ps2 keyboard, pressing delete during start up, nothing happens
-top box internal lights work, and the CD drive flashes a green light
-new battery, removed and reseated ram set
-no beeping sounds from top box
no real history on machine, bought in Virgina missing main board. No lights on the board when stuck at MSVERIFY.
Do I have a Bio1 or Bio2 machine? Do we see any obvious issues?

Good description on what you have done so far.
Bottom cpu is working normally.
Top box is having issues.  Usually it's more than one cap. Try removing the ram and see if you get any beeps or long tones. If not, it is not even trying to boot.
CPU under the fan may be an issue. They aren't terribly expensive for a working used one on Fleebay.

From the chip set in the lower cpu I would say you probably have a bios 2 top box

not going well. nothing after replacing the one noticeable bad cap. had my IT guy at work try to find a replacement board or someone to replace the caps. no luck there as well. he found one matching board for 1200 bucks, which I passed on. he is now checking other possible replacements including possible custom board. I'm stuck for now. I have a friend in Danville, VA that has 6-reel touch machines. I'm reaching out to him for a possible working replacement. Anyone with a top board?

Cleaned up the machine and moved it from the work bench to the slot room and plugged it in. Now I'm getting some life out of top box. Is this a hard drive issue? What are my next steps? Thanks!

Does not appear to be a hard drive issue.
When you lifted the door latch what did it say the error was?

When the top box boots up do you get a red white and blue finger screen or a green and yellow energy star?

Based on the bgm20048, ata20023 you probably have a red white and blue finger screen.
That is a bios one hard drive and top box.
The chips on the lower mpu are for bios two.
If this is true the cheapest way to go is to install different SB, and SG chips.

If you have a bios one top box as I suspect you will need SB000535 and SG000290 gm1 and gm2
You probably won't find this information anywhere.
Please confirm finger bios 1 screen.
If you need chips pm me.

finally confirmed the red white and blue finger screen. after adding the correct bottom chip set the machine finally booted and worked. SB000535 and SG000290 gm1 and gm2 were needed. thanks Qbert!
